Good grief, has it really been that long?

Ugh. Makes me feel old.

I still remember getting mine after it launched in the states, and playing Super Mario World for the first time.

Only other console to recreate THAT experience was the N64, with Mario 64. Other than that... there's been nothing else quite like that first time playing that game.

And to think we have only had stable low-level, cycle-accurate emulation in the last 10 years (bsnes)

I have an SNES. I wonder what I should get it for its belated birthday? Should I get it a cake? With Mario on it, perhaps? Should the cake be chocolate?

It'll be a good excuse to eat cake, anyway.

You should have an anniversary party for it and invite us all.

It's the SNES' birthday; shouldn't it be doing the invitations?
I think the best gift for SNES would be either a brand new game or updated innards (organ transfer of sorts!).

You could do a lot worse than SNES9x. Pretty much 100% accurate and runs custom chip games like Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings no problems.

Happy 25th, SNES! :D I mean, even though it's a few years older than I am, it's still one of my all time favorite systems.

you mean like inserting modern hardware into a SNES "shell"? sounds like a project a dedicated fan would undergo. :)

i don't think SNES dev kits are even around anymore, though.

There's a difference, though. Most emulators use a lot of tricks and speed hacks to get games to run at a decent speed. Try running BSNES, it is slooowwwwww.

For the most part, you won't notice if an emulator isn't accurate, since they try to thoroughly make sure that every official game works almost exactly as it should. But certain pirates, homebrews, and ROM hacks might work perfectly in emulators, but buggy on real hardware (and vice versa).

My SNES cr@pped out about 5 years ago & I bought a duel system that plays NES games too. I never had an NES & the idea of a new system seemed better than an official used one. I haven't played it in a while thou.
