PSP/PS1 compatibility???

Alright, so I recently learned that you could download old PS1 games onto your PS3 via PSN and play them through your PSP. What I DON'T understand is how do you use the L2/R2 buttons if the PSP has none? Or is that completely left out? (

the analog stick is used to substitute for l2 and r2. or you can use the d pad for those buttons and the stick to control. you can change the control scheme like that
