Do you attempt to talk to all villagers etc. in RPGs?

Not sure if it's just a personal compulsion, considering some people wouldn't even follow the main storyline (bored too easily unless there's fighting non-stop?) but I did - the most difficult was Grandia: it had seemingly hundreds of people in every place and IIRC the texts changed every so often. Sometimes I'd feel like resetting the game if I thought I'd missed reading some text due to irreversible changes to the story.

Yes I do this as well, I don't like the idea of missing anything on my quest.
Some of the NPC's have funny text or Easter Eggs :)

i do not play "role playing games" , but i do play "real time strategy" and and "city building" games in which "villagers" are a component.

the RTS games i play have no dialogue interface with villagers because they are merely laborers who perform their functions without question. the RTS games i play are "age of empires" and "empire earth" (the best one) and "command and conquer" etc, and villagers are simply assigned to gather resources and forgotten about.

the city building games do have a "dialogue interface" with the villagers (or otherwise "citizens"), and i did early on consult them for their impression of the city, but when i realized they have a repertoire of about 15 phrases, i decided that their opinion was irrelevant because i was always already aware of what they reported to me.

so the answer is "no". i do not talk to villagers.

on a side note, when i was younger, i used to like to execute my villagers when i knew that i was about to complete the level.

when i knew that after the next action i performed, i would be "victorious" (which ends the level), i used to delay performing that action, and i rounded up my villagers and got them all to assemble in a single area (from all far flung corners of the map), and i got them all to face me (after i zoomed to ground level), and then i "selected" them all, and thanked them for their efforts that were crucial to the effort, and then i would tell them that their service to the kingdom was now complete, and then i hit the delete button, and listened to their chorus of "death cries", then i performed the last action i needed to perform to complete the level.

i do not do that any more because i got bored with it.

I go off the track and explore a lot in Fallout 3 New Vegas. There aren't that many "villagers" though. They're usually dead because of all the monsters and violent animals around.

A friend of mine was talking about how disappointing it is to play skyrim after rping in wow... cuz erm, she says it's disappointing when the villagers don't talk back when she's rping. I think she was serious haha :roll: :).

Only games I ever talked to all npcs were the Final Fantasy games since event switches usually wouldn't open unless you talked to a certain npc. Really annoying, I remember not being able to progress in Wall Market or Rocket Town without talking to every single npc twice.

I intentionally talk to everyone in Pokémon games in hopes of getting useful items or TMs. Those are the only traditional rpgs I play anymore.

It's pretty fun messing with NPCs in Skyrim, because if you use a lot of Magicka in front of a child, they'll ask you to make them invisible, and you can lie to them and tell them you already have. Then they go around and try to scare the other NPCs.

... Yeah. :lol:

Depends which game, In Zelda, usually, unless I want to blast through the game. Fallout 3/Fallout new Vegas, at least once per npc, same with Oblivion.
every other game, depends on my mood (once in SA1 I talked to everyone after ever level)

Pretty much, and most times it's because of the inner completionist :? Some games you never know what skills or filling sidequests you'll come across until you chat it up with NPC's. Ironically, I love listening to the funny text of NPC's because it's pointless and breaks the "serious" tone of the plot.

I do not complete a round around the village without talking to at least everyone once.

I know they say the same stuff all the time but man I just love reading what they say...

On a somewhat related (but fairly narrow) note, does anyone else here, when they play a Pokemon game (or any other game with a large bestiary of sorts) go through the entries and read all of them in one go? I always thought the collecting part was fun when you got to learn about each character and their unique capabilities, and reading through each entry was a lot of fun for me.

Well, after I get all the Chozo lore and Space Pirate Data in Metroid Prime I read them all in one go.

Yeah I did that! Pickpocketing in Fallout can be pretty fun too, especially with Dynamite. 8)

I tend to. I also tend to talk to all npcs twice. There are exceptions mind you. If a game has way too many npcs, it's way too much work to talk to everyone.

It has become a basic thing for me to do in a RPG, but I don't obsess over every villager or shopkeep. It depends on how complicated the game is, and if I want 100% completion, seeing that side quests are given sometimes by taking to that one NPC in that one moment. I can get pretty frustrated if I find out I should have talked to a character much earlier in the game to get that weapon or other thing at my current point in the game. A "missable" or "forever gone" as they are called. I'm near the end of my first trip through 3DS Tales of the Abyss right now, and I sure have missed a lot of extra stuff.

Of course I do. Don't you have to? Depending on the game you won't be able to progress until you talked to everyone, or at least the right ones.
