"Wizards of the Coast has announced a 'new iteration' of their Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Early information says the game will be more inclusive, with a basic rule set that 'builds out.' This Spring, WotC will be 'conducting ongoing open playtests with the gaming community to gather feedback on the new iteration of the game as we develop it.'"

I've signed-up, I hope for a roleplay instead of a ruleplay system...

Anyone?

Maybe this should have been in the News section.

I played alot of 2nd Ed stuff when I was at school (I long time ago obviously!), but since WotC took over the franchise it just seems to have churned out edition after edition, 3rd, 3.5, 4th and now 5th. I'm amazed that they haven't tried combining it with MtG yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to seeing what they've done with it, but not many RPer's around my area to game with.

Doesn't seem like it took them long to go from 4 to 5. I remember 3 and 3.5 being around forever before 4 hit.

I started playing when they had the old paper back books. I missed the first print of AD&D, but I got it on the second print run. D&D 3 to 4 seemed to me like they were intended more for computer conversion rather than table top play. It'll be good if they simplify and allow for easier customization. I still play from time to time but we use a lot of house rules.

They're already on 5th Edition? People poured hundreds of dollars in 4 ed. rule books, not to mention all the supplemental crap.

Hey, off topic, but if you're like me, and like the 3.5 edition, try pathfinder.

Friends of mine did spend alot of money into it, I just bought the basic starter set.

I started with 4th edition, but i'll look into Pathfinder anyway.

A 5th edition already?

Screw WotC. I'm sticking with 3.5 and Pathfinder. I have yet to spend a dime on 4th edition and this just validates that decision even further.

I'm actually thinking about trying one of the versions that Gary Gygax himself actually wrote. Likely AD&D 1st, though Swords & Wizardry ("retro clone" of original 70s D&D rules) sounds interesting too...but maybe a bit too oldschool...

I just need to get the old gang back together =|

I played 2 to 3.5 but I lost interest with the release of the 4th edition. primarily due to the spellplague.

I'm reading up on Pathfinder, looks very promising. My roleplay group is fed up with 4E, wanting change.

I am keeping taps on 5E, but until that comes i'm going for Pathfinder.

I remember playing AD&D back in the day. Didn't have revised editions then. I'm been away from all that for so long, so I missed why the re-wrote the rules. The cynic in me says its just about getting everyone to pay up again every few years. I mean, what was wrong with the original edition? We had great times but I guess the people in suits took over :(

I'm assuming (only assuming, I have no idea really), 2nd Edition was to be able to put something out after Gygax had left the company.

3rd edition isn't too difficult to guess...WotC bought TSR and decided to do something with it.

Hey, I am learning how to play Pathfinder, but I the way I got into it was because of three things: 3.5 has a confusing wiki, Pathfinder's SRD is pretty organized and it costs no money what so ever to learn the rules, and the fact I got into Neverwinter Nights 2 enough, I wanted to play something similar to 3.5.

I think Pathfinder's SRD is good, but I have one problem with Kobold Character's ability scores: the fact it only gives +2 Dex, but -2 Con and Str. I think it would be better if they added to that +2 Int. Maybe it's just me, but I think that would make for a bit less nerfed beings. Also, Drow are way, way overpowered in the game.
Of the part about the Kobold Race doesn't make sense, go to featured races and the kolbold section to see what I am talking about.

I picked up the core books of 3.5 awhile back myself. And from all the veterans who talk of D&D, it's still the best, as is Pathfinder.

I never read all the rules, though, as noone in my area actually plays... Maybe we can get some online gaming going? Though I know some people are incredibly opposed to online TTRPG's.
Then again, I would also need some help learning the game myself, as I don't really like trudging through it all and would like to get right into the RPing.

Back on topic... Yeah, 5th is coming out way too soon. But that might be because 4th edition had so much backlash to it, and long-time fans hated it, generally. I think if they wanted to make more money, they would honestly keep releasing revisions and supplements. Generally, I hope this is improvement over what many of my old friends called "D&D mmo in TT form."

My favorite edition of AD&D was 2nd Edition Player's Option. Mainly because the perks and flaws system allowed you to make some pretty off the wall characters.
