When a game gives you the chance to choose between two races or factions, do you rather choose the "good" or the "evil" one? For example, would you rather play Jedi or Sith, Alliance or Horde (I know the Alliance isn't really "better" than the Horde, but they're more shiny and disciplined)?

This also works with games where you can make decisions (like Mass Effect, where you can be Paragon or Renegade).

I myself tend to choose the darker faction/way. Probably because I can identify with them better. No I'm not evil, but most of those factions have a kind of "outsider" feeling.

Normally I'd stick to being the good or light side path... mostly because in those situations, I tend to choose the side that needs the most help and/or the one I feel is the more able.
Though I try to be evil... it just doesn't do it for me, never has done.

I always choose the nice side, I am a good guy, i don't want to make people suffer, or kill innocent people.

At the same time I usually like the style of the dark side, even if I don't agree with hurting innocents, and I usually feel disappointing that I can not be some dark figure that can make people feel fear and hide and the shadows, but still do the right thing. I guess I respect some of the lessons from a character called Kreia, someone who could see how being too kind could be harmful, she is a weird of selfishness and greater good. And I like the idea of being evil to evil characters, like forcing two thugs to throw themselves off a railing. Kind of like being a mix of Batman, and Rosarch.

Depends on the series really. In Dragon Age I was a evil but in Mass Effect I was a goody two shoes spacer who was kind to everyone and a bit naive. Its fun being evil in Ultima so that goes without saying.

Other times I'll pick the faction I prefer, which is usually the evil or darker one, but like I said it really depends on my mood and how much I like the game. I was totally evil in Star Wars Knights of the Repulic because how can you beat sith lightning? Come on.

In the Shin Megami Tensei series I am always chaos if I can help it. I just cannot do law, it is so gut wrenching and cruel even if chaos makes you do horrible things as well. I'm just a very free spirited person that believes in freedom and I'm aware neutral is probably the best intended path but it seems too indecisive and I enjoy taking sides in games that offer it. SMT is very interesting because of moral choices you make yet no side is truly good and usually ends with you being manipulated, be it via the angels and God or Lucifer and the demons. Neutral is always the choice for humanity but I don't like humanity and again think its boring not to take one side in a video game.

I like to be nice to good to animals and characters (unless there annoying) and as sadistically evil as I can to evil people.

I like to be opposite of real life when I play games, because games are fantasy, so I think it is way more fun to be E.V.I.L.

If I can't be evil, but have the option to be a complete jerk, I will pick that instead.

Even though this is the most fun choice, I actually enjoy playing many different characters of differing alignments for variety.

I'd feel bad if I played the evil side even though it doesn't actually matter since it's just a video game. The PS3 "Infamous" series is a great example of a game where you choose between good and evil. You constantly choose between helping innocent people or robbing/killing them.

I can never bring myself to play evil characters, even if it is just in a computer game. I'm always good.

In a manner consistent with honor. Doesn't always mean the conventional sense of "good" or "evil."

That sounds like how the Star Trek "Klingons" always talk about being honorable, and then they hurt/kill people for saying the wrong thing to them.

One thing I dislike about video games now is that you can only be a paragon of all that is holy OR an evil megalomaniac. Bioware games are bad for this, what if I want to spare one person but ice the guy that's obviously full of s**t about not selling illegal arms?

Most games these days have a very linear concept of good and evil. You can only do one or the other. Being "neutral" doesn't get you any other ending or unique gameplay, etc.
So I generally go through both the good and evil storylines. Though, it's generally harder to get me to do evil, cruel things.

It's humorous that in most games that have lots of random NPCs, you find yourself killing them without really thinking about it, and it makes no difference in the story. Many sandbox games like GTA or Prototype are known for this. Though I think Infamous has that evil/good system, though you can generally repair your alignment, I believe. But like in Fable, it's easy to become "holy" again, and any massacres or evil deeds you did can be erased by just hanging out in another town or area until your wanted amount goes down. Also, in the Elder Scrolls series, you can pay off for your fines (Though they can soar to ridiculous heights.) and you can get away with it. Though, there's no "good or evil" rating in that game, and things you do have much more consequence.

I tend to choose the good side, though I'm not above commiting crimes in video games if I feel my character can do it for a good cause.

Sadistic, with a side of good from time to time.
