TRUE Gamers
Now this may be a bit of a controversial topic so bear with me. I have been a gamer since the mid 80s and enjoy retro games as much as I do contemporary ones. Back then it always seemed to me that gaming was a "nerdy" or "geeky" pastime and I continue to feel that way even today, despite the activity becoming far more mainstream than it was and people are all about co-op and multiplayer these days. I too think it's unfair that we are often depicted as "fat virgins that live in our mother's basements" but at the same time I still consider it a loner's pastime. It is just how I feel.
I mention this because I am on a certain game company forum and in reading the numerous posts I noticed that many of the users are married and/or have kids or have GF or BF (whether the topic is related to a game or not). This really bothers me not only because am still alone at 33 but also because I feel gamers should be unique and interesting people and not follow the crowd like everyone else. Granted, many of these users probably met through gaming and a relationship may not have been their original intent. I am also not saying that these people don't deserve somebody special. It just seems to me that gaming is something that is meant for people like me, Aspie or otherwise. I feel like saying to some of these people "You're not a true gamer. Get off these forums because you obviously care about sex more than gaming." Of course I keep my lips sealed since I don't want to get booted. I also hate it when some users make sex jokes, innuendo or say anything dealing with relationships, light or serious. Anyone else agree with me?
I get that you feel like your subculture is being distorted, but the truth is, being in a relationship doesn't make a person a boring, conventional follower or mean they don't get to keep their interests. Sorry!
It's not that non-geeks are infiltrating geek territory, but that geeks are hooking up.

Funny story happened with me at work on that subject. I was talking to this girl at work with my buddy who's an Xbox 360 gamer. She talks about her BF and says: "Oh my BF is kind of a nerd! *gigles*"
-(me) Oh really is he into star wars? star trek? the lord of the rings comic books?
-(her) No...
-(me) then what is he into?
-Oh he plays video games!
*Me and my buddy look at each other and smile a bit*
The point of this story: times have changed since the days of gamers being basement dwelling dorks. The point isin't that he is or isn't a "true gamer", but that those two were able to hook-up and they're happy. Her comments were funny to me and my buddy because she's still in the old and outdated way of thinking.
I blame Call of Booty.
It's getting so out of hand the next Tomb Raider (not the upcoming one with it's survival horror elements the next one after will play look and feel like COD.It will also be released bi annually and the fans will go wow* as will Adrian in accounts
Who's buying Resident Evil 6
*I wont hold it against them the naivety of youth I suppose (with their adhd) - unless kids of today are less cynical

YES! THIS!
Gaming should be a hobby just like any other hobby someone chooses to do and those who don't do it never get in contact with it what so ever.
It became mainstream way too much.
If someone says he's a hardcore mountainclimber you expect him to be living in a hut on the mountains with a long beard caring for nothing else but scaling those hills, not someone who goes to his local gym three times a week and climbs the wall up and down 10 times as "exercise".
In "my" world, "modern" games would cost 200+ dollars, but would be bug free and very extensive. Each with a steep learning curve and possibly dedicated hardware to advance the experience even more.
It's been turned into casual money mode, where if you have money, can get get a "better experience" than those who actually devote their lives to it.
It's like how every "pro gamer" has a rich daddy who allowed him to fly across the world, or has the network to get him a contract. (I was kicking fatalities ass in quake but couldn't afford the tournament trip to las vegas where he became famous).
It's the games that these "pro gamers" choose that become -the- thing.. not the games the people who actually are "true gamers" think are the best games are based upon actual experience and a way of looking at it only they can. It's all about advertisement, and how google/ect control this. "Do no evil" was meant as a warning for everyone else not to get in -their- way, not a selfaimed statement.
I'll end ordering anyone who plays angry birds or minecraft to throw their computer into the trash right away. Also people who don't know that WoW was actually a really good new game first release and maybe first expansion. And people who after that didn't go back to an older game like UO, AC, DaoC, EQ, but went on playing aalll the different clones except for maybe one or two slip ups due to believing in the marketing promise of something new. Oh and people who never donated anything to dwarf fortress. People who think playing on an iphone/ipad makes them a gamer too. Jeez I'll end this before I never do.

Wait, console elitists labeling pc gamers as non-gamers? Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? As in, consoles are toys compared to a real gaming rig? I'm a console gamer though. I haven't actually been a pc gamer for years, and Diablo III is the first pc game I've picked up in a very long time. Anyways, litism in the gaming world has been around for longer than I have, and one group labeling another as non-gamers is not anything new. I don't have anything against people experiencing the joy of gaming for the first time. In fact, I'd love for as many people as possible to share in my hobby.
My problem is that people aren't experiencing gaming as I've known it. Cell phones, tablets and other such devices are not dedicated gaming devices, and so, I have no interest in gaming on them. As far as handheld systems go, the only current devices I accept as legit are the 3ds and the vita. Gaming on a past handheld system, including the psp and any of Ninty's prior handhelds from the ds and gameboy lines, is also legit in my book. I cannot express my disdain for app gaming. Forget motion control. Ever hear of a controller? The controller has worked just fine for longer than I have been gaming. Why mess with that? When it comes to pc gaming, what was wrong with the mouse and keyboard? If it worked just fine in the past, then as far as I'm concerned, there was never anything wrong with it to begin with. On the flip side, if it was never needed in the past, then as far as I'm concerned, it's not needed now. Things like online functionality weren't missed when they weren't a thing(at least for consoles). There was no online multiplayer, no trophies/achievements, no patches or dlc. Motion control wasn't really a thing, except maybe in small doses with certain accessories, like light guns and such. In fact, I'd say something was sacrificed with the introduction of all these things to console gaming.
Modern gaming culture has had a tremendous impact on gaming. Many gamers nowadays can't handle a simple cutscene, let alone anything that requires an actual attention span, and of course everything needs guns and explosions, and if it doesn't have multiplayer then it's completely worthless. Modern devs of course try to cash in on what's popular, rather than creating the games they want to create out of passion for what they do. I have a hard time believing many gamers even see gaming as anything more than entertainment, let alone a hobby. Most don't seem to have a gaming collection at all, and opt to rent games, or play them and trade them in, unless they have multiplayer, in which case, they'll only be kept around as long as the servers for that game are up. I don't consider my videogame collection to be that great, since I only started it at the tail end of the 6th gen, but at least I have a videogame collection. To be fair, most modern games aren't worth being added to a videogame collection anyways, and really are nothing more than a bit of entertainment for only as long as they last. Things like online play don't actually extend the shelf life of a game imho, because games shouldn't go bad like a piece of fish anyways. Online functionality will end when the servers go offline, so at least a good chunk of a lot of games will be lost to time. Games like Chrono Trigger though, live on forever, in their entirety. I wonder if people will really be talking about CoD 10 years down the road in the same way the classics are talked about now. Oh, digital downloads aren't really part of a collection, since you don't actually own them, and they don't occupy the physical world in any way, shape, or form.
I could go on and on about this topic, and there are areas I haven't touched, but I think I'll end my rant here.
