Recently I got into these games after getting disenchanted with Duke Nukem series as it presently stands. A lot of my fallout with that series came with Duke Nukem Forever, which ended up taking much of what I liked about the series and making it goofy and stupid, and giving Duke an irritating personality. Plus the game was a bit too shallow, it wasn't serious (like Duke Nukem 3D) and it insisted on the world being centered around Duke. That part I especially hated.
So, my thoughts on Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 are this:
They're becoming a new obsession! I think they're replacing the Duke Nukem series as my most favorite games. What I like best about them is that they are serious, they have situations where anybody could be a hero (that is, anybody could be a Survivor) and it allows almost unlimited possibilities. Part of my fascination lies in that in such a story, even I could be a Survivor as that isn't limited to anybody, whereas in DNF, only Duke gets to be the hero.
Also I find the Hunters extremely fascinating. I also find them quite hot <3 lol. I don't know why, but they have that feral sexiness that gives me the most loveliest of chills. Fortunately they are living zombies as opposed to being a walking corpse. ;D And that is another thing that's nice. Most of the enemies in L4D 1 &2 aren't stupid looking. In Duke Nukem Forever they made my most favorite enemy the pigcops stupid looking!. But in L4D the zombies aren't going to make you roll your eyes when you look at them.
I think the only thing that I would say that I don't like about the game mainly comes from some of the other players. I am still a complete and utter newbie when it comes to multiplayer, and right now I suck at it. Most of the players I have found on my one day of gaming were actually quite nice and forgiving, but once the competitive players arriving after the casuals left for the night, I got votekicked.
So that is my rambling thoughts on the game, and such. I'm glad I found it, the online community seems to be in quite healthy numbers and that's a sign of a lasting game.

They are indeed one of a kind, the L4D series. I enjoyed them a lot unfortunately i didn't play the first L4D a lot. In my opinion the cast in that game was far superior to L4D 2. My favorite monster has gotta be the Witch. Something about that nasty scream that states impending death. Haha that reminds me of a funny vid about the witch failing:

I feel like the only person who didn't mind Duke Nukem Forever too much...
Anyway, Left 4 Dead and its sequel are great games, yes
I agree with what you say, the endless possibilities for gaming make Left 4 Dead something that I can keep defaulting to every time I am unsure of what to play. Most games can't be dipped into or taken lightly; Left 4 Dead is always accessible for heavy or light gaming. The other players can sometimes be annoying, but it's great once you eventually find a decent group of the more tolerable ones and begin to work together properly.
I think the witches are a really iconic part of the series and probably the greatest contribution to the fear aspect experienced when you're newer to the game. Smokers are my favourite playable special infected :p
