I've only started getting into gaming this summer and have now played through the portal, half life and bioshock series. Last time I asked someone at a game store for suggestions they opened with "I can think of some girl-friendly RPGs" and that pretty much lost me then and there. I like first-person-shooters mostly, with no online components and some semblance of a plot. Also, if this is any help I have a mac and a xbox 360. any suggestions are incredibly welcome, thanks.

You'll find that most FPS campaigns/single player lack any semblance of a *good* plot. If I may ask, what else are you into besides first person shooters?

If you are looking for first person shooters with a plot, try these and most of them are fairly cheap now.

Must Play
Deus Ex: The Conspiracy (2000)
Red Faction (2001)

Highly Recommended
F.E.A.R
Fallout 3
Stalker
System Shock 2

Recommended
Crysis 1 & 2
Brother in Arms
Metro 2033
Far Cry 2
Bulletstorm
Area 51

Keep in mind she has a Mac, not a PC, so some older games might not be available on Mac at all. Its really only been in the last 5 years or so that games have been more commonly getting PC and Mac releases simultaneously, Mac gaming used to be a laughable oxymoron. I still hate Macs myself, but they at least are getting games now.

As far as story based shooters goes, you've already played Half-Life, so everything else will be downhill from there. Too many first-person shooters these days are aimed primarily at multiplayer audiences, with single-player as an afterthought, and even when they aren't, the story is usually so-so at best. We end up with the Halos and Call of Dutys and even worse, clones of them. I actually like the Halo games but not for single-player, I only play the campaign if I do so co-op. But story driven shooters are few and far between.

I'm drawing a blank on what games are available on Mac and 360, are there any other genres you like besides FPS? Any you can't stand?

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are pretty good, though they are much more in the RPG realm than most other FPS games. I wasn't a fan of Borderlands myself, but apparently a lot of people enjoyed it, and it's quite a bit more FPS heavy than those other two. Borderlands 2 seems quite a bit more popular.

Reading reviews of it, you may want to check out Dishonored, which comes out Tuesday. Open world first person game, with some similarities to BioShock and Half-Life 2, as well as Deus Ex and probably the most apt comparison, Thief: The Dark Project. If you like your first person games to include multiple options on how to accomplish an objective, be it killing everything in sight, or stealthing around and finishing the game without killing anyone, or more likely somewhere in between, this could be worth looking into. The early reviews for it are promising.

Sleeping Dogs is really cool, not that much shooting but lots of beating up people, an awesome open world, and car chases with police XD And it's all in Hong Kong, which is cool. And I think it's on a Mac.
Also, have you joined Steam? I really like having my games on there, it keeps them organized, it's easy to take photos, and some of the sales they have are awesome (the halloween one is coming up soon)

Nice. I just got an XBox 360 this Fall and now working through Bioshock myself.

For myself, I'm a fan of Splinter Cell. It is a 3rd person but not a typical shooter. It requires more stealth and planning.

Try Rock of Ages or Bomberman. Goofy, fun simple games that are gameplay focused.

Far Cry 2 the best FPS I've ever played not dumbed down all (I do worry about #3 ) , it seems to have got the "cod treatment" eg before you had a real time map yes it made it a "little bit hard" to get around at 1st, now you pause and mark the desitination on the map.

This dumbing down of games trend is getting out of hand "enough is enough "

Can you get steam on a mac? They have a lot of good deals for all sorts of games including the older ones.

Yes, they have Steam for Mac OS, but not every game on Steam is available on that platform. They are even working on a Linux client for Steam.

I may suggest "The Suffering: Prison is Hell" even though it is a 3rd person shooter (Don't touch the Suffering II, it is bad).
And "Alice: Madness Return" is also a good game, also 3rd person and not much of a shooter.

The thing is that games with a good story are fading to casual stupid games that are all the rage these days, the ones I mentioned are the only ones I think has good stories and not suggested by the people above.

Killzone (PS2) is an FPS that has fairly good plot and dialog as well as decent gameplay besides. Just don't touch the sequels (the result of a thorough and disastrous retcon).
