When I put a disc in the xbox360 it says "reading" for about 10 seconds then says "open tray" as if there is no disc in it. I tried tapping it, hoovering it, other discs in it, turning it on and off in various ways, but no joy. Also cleared the cache and deleted half the stored games. No joy.

Can you help me? Please tell me how to fix it, I can't afford another one :(

Sounds like it could be a disk drive, you can buy them for around £20 so it shouldn't be too expensive to fix.

Follow this guide for detailed instructions.

If you are still having trouble, send me a private message and I'll message my Skype name as I know a few technicians that are good with console repairs.

I have been having this problem too, I have been getting around it by trying a bunch of diffirent DVDs and games, may take take a little while but after it plays something, then it will be able to play what I wanted.

Also had a problem with the tray not opening, or at least taking ages before it does, but I can get it to open by hitting above the tray a few seconds after pressing the button.

I get so frustrated when it starts playing up, and get anxious.

it can also be something as simple as dust on the isk drive lens.

If its not reading games at all, it sounds like your 360 dvd lens has died on you. First thing you need to do is identify which drive you have: DVD Drive Guide Depending on how confident you are with hands on work you could either replace the lens which would cost around £6, or just stick in a new drive which would be £20. As for opening it and the replacement itself, there are plenty of youtube videos that will show you how. I would say opening the thing is the most annoying part, PS3's are much easier to get into.
