Not including the main character. Who are your Top3 favorite JRPG companions?

Mog - Final Fantasy 6

Image

Yeah he doesn't have much going on in terms of dialogue or character development. And he's kind of mid-tier from a gameplay perspective. And his dance skill isn't super-useful (but kind of cool). I just really like the fact that he exists for some reason. The idea of defeating the ultimate evil with a little albino teddy-bear creature. Also has the Moogle Charm which is super-useful when backtracking through random-battle areas.

Taloon - Dragon Quest 4

Image

That ordinary guy. His story is just inspirational. He abandons his minimum wage cashier job to go fight some monsters and do some trading, gets his family out of poverty, and helps save the world. And was badass enough to star in his own rogue-like series as well.

Glenn - Chrono Trigger

Image

Probably the best and most well-developed character in Chrono Trigger, another one that I made a point to keep in my party even when he wasn't as useful as some others. Also the dramatic reveal:

"What's the matter Glenn?"
"My name isn't Glenn... it's GLENN!"

There are slight spoilers for Chrono Trigger in your post, not sure if that's against any rules or anything :P

EDIT: Citan from Xenogears (Unarmed first time, he's badass enough then, then he comes back WITH A SWORD. Also because he has long hair and glasses...not to toot my own horn ;P)
Rei from Breath Of Fire 3 (As a child, he's one of the best attackers on your team. As an adult, HE'S A SMEGGING WERE-TIGER.)
Rune from Phantasy Star 4 (Able to learn a vast majority of the offensive magics in the game, his Techniques are vaguely familiar to fans of the series. Did I mention he's the fifth reincarnation of one of the original four party members that helped kill the final boss of Phantasy Star 1? Yeah...he's badass.)

*Spoiler warning*

1.Kaine - NieR
Image

Not that she really helps out a lot in battle. In fact, the AI rarely ever does, but I don't mind it so much as it seems the game was only really built more like a Zelda game anyway. Even so, a lot of the story revolves around her, to the point where it's debatable that she's more a main character than Nier is. She's dominant, swears a lot, kicks ass, and even has this awesome theme: click me

2.Ayla - Chrono Trigger
[img][800:1623]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs40/i/2009/031/5/a/Ayla___Chrono_Trigger_by_Ruby3ye5.jpg[/img]

Another more powerful female character, though she is generally much more positive and optimistic. Also seems to be one of the best characters, what with not having to buy her weapon upgrades and her attacks gaining very significant boosts in damage every level or so. Her techs with Crono are particularly useful, and later on I enjoyed using her with both Glenn and Janus.

3.Vivian - Paper Mario 2
Image

Not so much story significance(I find that true for most Paper Mario companions after their initial introduction), but she's probably the absolute most useful one in each of the games(though I haven't played the 3DS one and don't even know if it's out yet). With most characters I struggle to use them perfectly, but with Vivian the game almost seems broken, which may or may not be a good thing depending on what you want out of a game. Of course I' not sure I remember it exactly as it's been more than a few years. Wish I hadn't sold the game. :(

^ I like your answers. Ayla is another great character. Also Vivian is trans in the japanese version.

Would probably have to be Joshua from The World Ends With You @ # 1

Awesome character, decent attacks and fun to use.

I can't really think of too many others that really stand out above the rest.

Maybe Noel from Final Fantasy XIII-2 for his awesome voice actor.

And Rose from Legend of Dragoon for being awesome.

Really? Seems a bit odd for a Nintendo game, but I suppose I could see that. Not too jarring when it's arguable that Kaine is sort of a futanari. :P

lol. Never even got that far in the game tbh. Quite a few scenes from the first few hours in the game stick in my memory though. Thought she was pretty awesome.

Shame absolutely none of my images worked properly though..

A transexual being odd for a Nintendo game? What about Birdo, the transvestite dinosaur from Super Mario Bros 2?
Image

As for my top three? Well, I have two. I'll think of a third.

Celes Chere
Image

Rescued from prison after being sentenced to torture and execution for questioning the Empire's underhanded tactics, she defects to the rebels. Despite suspicions from the rebels that her loyalty may continue to lie with the Empire, she leads a team to infiltrate the Empire's research facilities. During the raid, it becomes apparent that the circumstances under which she was recruited by the rebels may have been staged, and that she may have been working for the Empire all along. Her true loyalties are revealed however, when she is given the task of executing the rebels and instead maims Kefka, a rogue general of the Empire at a key moment.

In the aftermath of Kefka managing to bring an apocalypse upon the world and rising to ultimate power, Celes is marooned on an island along with Cid, with whom she has shared a close father-daughter type relationship. She cares for him in his final days, and upon his passing attempts to commit suicide. However, after finding a raft to escape the island, she regains hope and starts a long journey to find survivors of the apocalypse and eventually reform the resistance to Kefka's dominion.

Magus
Image

Born as Janus, an 'Enlightened One' (magic user) around 12000BC as a prince of Zeal, he becomes aware of the developing insanity of his mother, Queen Zeal in her search for immortality. When the queen is successful in completing the Mammon Machine in this search, it begins to absorb too much power, creating rifts in time that sent everyone present to different eras, including Janus and his sister, Schala.

Janus is sent to the Middle Ages, an age in which humans are unable to use magic and the former servants of the Enlightened Ones, called Mystics, are at war with humanity. Magus is found and taken in by the Mystics, whose magic surpasses any of their own. Over time he becomes their leader, taking the name of Magus. He seeks to gain power with the eventual intention of developing his magic so that he can summon Lavos, the powerful entity responsible for the madness of his mother and by extension, the loss of his sister. When you first meet Magus, the party believe he is summoning Lavos with the intention of using it as a weapon against humans. Only after attempting to kill Lavos twice with unsuccessful results does he realise that he may need others to succeed at such a herculean task.

A transvestite is someone who dresses in the clothing of the opposite sex but still identifies as their birth gender. Birdo is a transwoman, born biologically male but transitioned fully into female.

Actually Nintendo is surprisingly progressive when it comes to gender stuff. Birdo is just seen as female, her trans status doesn't even come up most of the time. No one in-universe has any issues with it.

What is that Celes screenshot from? I don't remember the Opera showing that angle in FF6.

Question: Is Birdo one of the good guys in Mario? Mario only ever dreamt of fighting Birdo.

Yeah, all Birdo ever wanted to do was play sports and party. And date Yoshi.

I see, so Mario basically wanted to hurt him after all.

Date Yoshi? Why are they never in his games then?

In the Camelot continuity, Birdo is Yoshi's tennis partner and girlfriend.
