Super Smash Bros 4 - what would you like to see?
Super Smash Bros 4 is apparently being developed for Wii U and 3DS. It will probably be a long time before we get any solid information.
So, my question is: if you were developing Super Smash Bros 4, what would be your priorities for the game? Would you try to put in your favourite obscure Nintendo characters, or would you go around making deals for more third-party characters? What new stage ideas would you try out? Would you place the focus on hectic fun or on competitive balance? What new mechanics would you introduce (if any)? Would you include something along the lines of The Subspace Emissary?
Personally, I think that the only new third-party character should be Megaman.
I would enforce a strict rule about "clones" - either change them beyond recognition, or throw them out. In particular, I would give Ganondorf an entirely new moveset (although I would keep his badass side+B from Brawl).
I would update all the Zelda characters to Skyward Sword style (including Ganondorf and Shiek - hey, Shiek wasn't in Twilight Princess, but they updated her style for Brawl!)
I would keep the Final Smash idea, but I would change it from an item into some kind of meter system.
New Nintendo characters I would like to see: Ridley, Little Mac, Tom Nook.
I would focus on hectic items-based gameplay, but I would make sure that there are lots of "hidden techniques" for all the hardcore people out there.
I would love to see a stage based on Mario Galaxy.
I would base the single-player modes around simple obstacle courses built for specific characters. I would have no grand storyline stuff.
I would put a lot of effort into providing alternate costumes for the characters, not just alternate colours. A lot of these characters have worn plenty of iconic outfits over the years, and it would be neat to unlock these costumes over time, just like you unlock music tracks in Brawl.
I would change Mario's down+B into the spin from Mario Galaxy, and I would change Luigi's down+B into something based on the Poltergust.

Travis Touchdown - Henry, Ryuji
Geno
I know some are definitely more realistic than others and I don't expect some of them to be in the next game at all, but it's fun to daydream about. None of them would be clones, or at least be far from clones as possible. Couldn't think of alternate costumes for everyone, but I'd prefer them over simple recolors of characters.
As for stage ideas, I've got maybe a few:
Super Mario Galaxy - Basically a whole bunch of different levels from SMG made into a stage, starting with the Observatory, as I feel only doing one would not represent the game well enough. Levels like Good Egg, Toy Time, Matter Splatter, or Freezeflame could do well. Not sure about SMG2 as I have yet to play it.
Skyloft - Skyloft from Zelda: Skyward Sword. ot exactly where it would take place on it exactly, but I guess anywhere would do. Stuff like Beedle's shop ship would pass by. Maybe you'd get to ride some Loftwings around the sky before a tornado launches you back to Skyloft.
Sandship - Could pretty much be a replacement for the Great Sea stage from Brawl. The Timeshift stone could be hit sometimes and be activated or deactivated, causing some hazards to appear and others to disappear, and eventually Tentalus could come and screw things up.
Aether/Dark Aether - Admittedly it's a bit difficult to think of any specific area that's iconic in the Metroid series, and I'm not sure where exactly this stage would be. Only concept I have in mind is that it would switch between normal and Dark Aether. In Darth Aether, players would have to stay within the bubbles light crystals provide to prevent taking damage, and hitting them will cause them to deactivate for a short period of time. Alternatively Phaaze from MP3 might be better, but I can't think of any good ideas for one.
Sonic Generations - Pretty much like the game itself, going through so many different games and eras of the Sonic series.
Mother Base - Given that the next major Metal Gear Solid game is going to be a sequel to Peace Walker, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have Mother Base as a stage. Either that or the Big Shell, seeing as to how similar they seem to be.
I don't care about much else, except maybe go back to some of the more generic orchestrated music from Melee. I found some of the renditions in Brawl to be complete disasters all because they wanted to experiment with songs they should not have touched. Take out tripping. Bring back some of the older items. If not all stages can be brought back, bring back at least one from each of the old games. Expand heavily on the stage creator. If you're going to give us another story mode, make the story actually good, have depth, have some sort of dialogue(though I'd prefer written over bad voice acting), instead of stickers give us more substantial leveling up, make the gameplay less Kirby/Donkey Kong and more it's own thing, and make decision making actually matter to some extent.
A better online mode would be nice, but I don't have a WiiU yet myself so I have no idea what the online is like in general.

Yeah, that is a problem with this type of thread.
I tried to avoid that problem by asking: "What would you prioritise if you were the director?"
In other words, you are in charge of the project, but you have a responsibility to make a game that appeals to a wider audience. One or two obscure picks is fine, but you can't include the whole cast of your favourite game or whatever.
The current director, Masahiro Sakurai, is a good example. He comes from a background of making Kirby games, and as SSB director he has given the Kirby franchise a lot of love, but not so much that people question his judgment.

With Namco co-developing it, I think Pac-Man might be a shoe-in. Personally I just want Mega Man as far as third party characters goes, I still want to the focus to obviously be on Nintendo themselves.
Other things I would love to see
- Ganondorf get his own move set
- A playable character from Golden Sun
- Waluigi
- Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2
- King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country
- Another F-Zero racer
- Little Mac
- Further differentiation between Fox, Falco, and Wolf
- Final Smash moves could be removed for all I care, I love the other items in the game, but those smash balls just turned the game into whoever was lucky enough to be near it gets a free KO or three.
- Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy
- Toon Link replaced with Young Link again, with a new move set setup similarly to Pokemon Trainer, cycling through the masks from Majora's Mask.
- A better level editor
- Better online play
For a character wishlist, here would be my take:
Mega Man/Mega Man X
Zero
Leon S. Kennedy
Geno
Smithy (Boss character)
Kalas
Krystal
Saki Amamiya
Marx (Boss character)
Spencer
Viewtiful Joe
Amaterasu
For a gameplay wishlist:
No more clone characters, or at least give them a new setlist.
Examples: Ness could have PK Starstorm while Lucas has a completely different set (Status effects for example like causing stun or sap, with his final smash being PK Love)
Fox and Falco, though their setlists are the same, they differenciate in many ways. Their final smashs... not so much. Give Falco a damn Arwing. Wolf's final could be a combination stricke.
Voice acting in single player.
Add some moves. If the case, incorperate quarter rolls on the ground or something along that line.
If I think of anymore, I'll add.

I've always toyed with the idea of Luneth from Final Fantasy III as a third-party character; he would have three different classes to peruse (best bet warrior, black mage and... well anything goes) each with it's own techniques and parameters, in the same vein as Pokémon Trainer, or Toro from Playstation All-Stars, if you've played that one :3 NYAA~

With Kid Icarus: Uprising having a bunch of good characters, I think there should be some people joining Pit from the franchise. I would like Viridi, but would be happy with just Phosphora, she could have a similar thing with Viridi for a final smash as Pit had with Paluteina. and perhaps Medusa or Hades. I would quite love a fourth wall breaking aspect of some kind as Uprising did quite a lot and mentioned Smash Bros.
I would have liked Banjo and Kazooie, but I get the feeling that won't happen now thanks to Microsoft.
Perhaps two variations of Pokemon trainer, we can have Red from the previous game, and perhaps one of the female trainers like White. Well if they plan to add in another pokemon like the did with Lucario, they should probably use Zorosrk, its illusion abilities could make it rather unique among fighters. Also bring back Mewtwo.
I like Boxman108's idea of Midna & Wolf Link, I also like idea of Majora's Mask Link, most of the combat could be through the masks, and final smash could be Fierce Deity. The different iterations of Link work as they are all technically different people.

Eh, Marina Liteyears from Mischief Makers.
Considering that Microsoft may ask to use the Bots 'n Nuts BK, rather then the original BK we love and grew up with, their absence maybe for the best in this respect.
I dunno... it would be really easy to get carried away when it comes to Zelda. Remember, it already has 4 or 5 representatives (depending on how you count).
I quite like the idea that the Zelda representatives in Smash Bros somehow capture the "essence" of Zelda without getting too bogged down in details of which game is being referenced. For example, the Zelda characters in Brawl are visually connected to Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, but their movesets are not connected to a particular game (with the exception of little touches like Link's Gale Boomerang). In fact, as I mentioned earlier, Shiek shouldn't even exist! But she does, and it works fine.
To me, having a very specific version of Link in Smash Bros would be sort of silly, like having Fusion Suit Samus as a separate character.

Eh, I think Wind Waker/Toon Link should have been a bit more different. He's become a bit more his own character, what with The Minish Cap, Four Swords, and DS games going with the same style, and I think that the character in Brawl should have had a more original moveset with items from these games rather than being a clone of Twilight Princess/normal Link. Perhaps Midna should be a character by herself, though, with two Links already being present. If not she should at least be an Assist Trophy.

Honestly, I think he should be thrown out. In Smash Bros 4, I'd like to see:
- Skyward Sword Link (normal moveset but with a few flourishes, like Beetle instead of Boomerang)
- Skyward Sword Zelda / Skyward Sword Shiek (normal moveset, Shiek visually based on Skyward Sword Impa)
- Skyward Sword Ganondorf (completely new moveset, visually based on Demise)
