Darkstalkers Ressurection came out today and my brother said that he would help me connect to XBOX Live which I am not able to do. I thought my dad had written down the WPAD connection thing so I tried it and it didn't work! Now I am worried that I will screw up and ruin my 360. Is that going to happen because I did this?

You cant damage the system simply by trying to connect or trying to set up the connection stuff, so dont worry about that. If it's giving you errors when you're trying to set that up, chances are some of the info is just incorrect, or there might be a problem with other devices or something. But it wont hurt the thing.

It might hurt your patience, though, trying to get it to do what you want :P
