I like the Sonic games outside of 06 and to some degree 4, Heroes and Pinball. All of the other games are fairly fun if, outside of 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles and Generations very flawed. Those that focused more on actual platforming rather than just throwing random ideas in to see if any of them stick were much better received in general and by me. I've racked up over 26 hours of Sonic Generations according to Steam (profile: Dr. Iwamine Shuu; same image as I have here) and have been playing the series since I got a Mega Drive at age... 3, 4, 5, something like that from my much older brother.

I can't say I really like Sonic fan characters, especially since so many are just recolours of actual characters, usually Sonic or Shadow. They tend to be Mary/Marty Sues and have hideous colour schemes. I've not exactly dug deep into the fandom, but I've got to say that in the OC department it seems to have as much good taste as MLP fans' black and red alicorns.

My first game was Sonic Heroes. I like That one, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic Colors, the incredible Sonic Generations. Sonic Chronicles, Also I have searched for the older Sonic games as well.

I guess it is best not to show you my characters then. I like Foxes allot, and most of them are foxes. I have a character that can freeze things, three giants, and character who can control plant life. Most of my characters have Aspergers as well, but they also are usually strategic masterminds. In fact my main villain is so evil, he set up an education course and a program for special need Moebians. (That was a joke. Helping up us aspies is a noble cause in my view.)

Not to be mean to you or anything, but that is the kind of thing I'm talking about. There's no real reference to point to for Sonic characters having elemental powers outside of Blaze and she's clearly designed to be an exception. That doesn't sound half as bad as, say, Sonichu though.

Well in fact my character comes from her world, yet he is chemist in the field of cryogenics, and is sort of minister of education to princess Blaze's government. Yet he is weaker then Blaze, and in fact he is a cowardly nerd. I do draw them now, but some of them still look similar to the other characters.
I thought of the cryo super powered character while studying chemistry, eating one of those freezable ice sickle things that are wrapped in plastic, while listening to Sonic Radio online while I studied. True story.

As a member of deviantArt, I think I can safely say I've seen the worst that the fandom has to offer.

As it stands, I feel that many official characters already have the value of fan characters, in that they should simply vanish off the roster as having been robotinized irreversibly for the sake of limited drama/celebration. Names like Big, Marine, Silver, Shadow, and pretty much everyone beyond Knuckles including Amy are pretty much deadweight to the series.

It is not all bad, but I will agree with you there are many problems in the fandom. Fetishes, the desire to be popular, and many factional flame wars take place all the time. I would disagree with you to some exstent there. Yes Big, Shadow, and marine are not my favorites.Yet I love Silver and Amy as characters. Now they need to be brought to more attention, but they do have value in my eyes as Sonic characters.

Yes... I am a huge Tails and Blaze fan. Tails since Adventure 2 and Blaze the Cat since Sonic Rush :p

I've seen some sights on DevientArt, but that's nothing to what comes out of Tumblr :?

I thoroughly enjoyed both of those games.

How bad is tumblr?

I draw the arbitrary line at Knuckles. Sonic had one best friend, one rival, and one arch nemesis and that was all he needed.

As for me even though Sonic is at heart a simple game made to easily be picked up. I prefer a cast of characters in a story, as well as multiple villains. I will admit I thought Mephiles in Sonic 06 was a better villain then Eggman. Also I accepted Silver and Blaze into the fandom quite easily as well.

I've got mixed feelings on the series. Of course I don't care much for it at all anymore but I used to like them.

I'd started with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the Gamecube, so that may be a significant factor in which games I've enjoyed. After that I got Sonic Adventure DX. I liked both of them a lot, though playing them now I can see why people don't like their glitchyness or general cheesiness. Still, they have a certain charm to me and just feel classic. After those, I played Heroes, which I felt was a tiny bit of an improvement in some aspects, like not having a super complex story(though still ruined by dialogue), the nice comicy art design, and the focus on a variety of enemies and boss battles. Shadow the Hedgehog(the game) seemed like a rehash of SA2B, only based on the Sonic Heroes template, and it felt to me like a "so bad it's good" kind of game.

Later on I got to playing Sonic and the Secret Rings, which I enjoyed a lot despite the slightly clunky controls(which I got used to and they turned out to work really well once I mastered them) and the unnecessary lyrics in the level music. The story was decent, the art style was great, the gameplay was pretty good for what was supposed to be a spinoff, and I just felt that it was a pretty cool setting for a Sonic game. Erazor was a nice change for a villain, despite still being stereotypical for one. Sonic and the Black Knight, as a sequel, disappointed me a lot. I felt that the controls were really dumbed down for no good reason. Why bother with motion controls for swordplay if it's only going to be waggle?? Why give us control over his movement with the control stick if you can only move forward and back? Why stick with a solely vanilla fantasy setting? And why make the game so short? I don't understand any of these decisions that were made. Not to mention they botched the great customization system Secret Rings had.

Once I was able to afford a 360, the first game I got for it was Sonic '06, despite having heard how bad it was. I was expecting it to be terrible, and it was, but I still had fun with it. It was a similar experience to Shadow's game, only that Shadow's game was actually a bit more polished and far less glitchy, and the story was not near as contrived. Sonic '06 feels like it tries too hard and that the game itself is very broken and has unneeded additions to it. Not to mention stuff like load times, either. It's simply a very unplayable game. Still, it was very fun to glitch out and just laugh at how awful it is; it's even more fun to watch the Game Grumps play it on youtube. Sad to say, I think this game is what's proven that the Sonic Adventure formula really wouldn't work in a modern game, or at least not the way that they did it. I can not decide whether this or Sonic Chronicles on the DS are my least favorite, but both are really bad to me.

I played both versions of Unleashed(specifically the Wii version and 360 version), and both had good and bad things about them. Both were far more polished than '06, thankfully. Better writing, voice acting, a more balanced story with not so much overly serious drama, etc. Far better art style than something realistic(though I didn't mind Eggman's design in '06 that much). The problem the Wii version faced was there being far too many werehog levels compared to normal levels, though I feel that the werehog in general was handled a lot better in the Wii version, and had a lot more platforming than boring combat. Alternatively, the 360 version has a good balance, and I feel has better normal levels overall, and of course it has two more main levels. Either way, I considered Unleashed to be one of the better games alongside the Adventure games.

Sonic 4 episode 1 was the last one I played. Now, I did play the original games, being 1 through Sonic & Knuckles, and I feel that they are pretty overrated among elitists and purists, but Sonic 4 felt pretty bad in comparison to them. The physics were just really off and caused a lot of problems. I know I'm bad at 2D platformers, but I managed to beat Sonic 3 at least, so I should not have had as much of a problem with Sonic 4 as I did.

Judging from that, as well as how Colors and Generations look to me, it seems the series is heading a direction I don't much care to follow. Sure they took an ok template from Sonic Unleashed, but I'd rather they keep striving to change for the better rather than simply being unoriginal and sticking with what kind of works. That and they shouldn't have to deliberately buy fans with promises of going back to their roots and working off simple nostalgia.

Speaking of characters, I'm fine with just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman, and maybe Amy if she can refrain from being annoying. Though I do like Big as he adds contrast to most of the "cool" characters, being overly silly himself. I don't like Shadow at all, and while Silver's powers are cool, his character isn't all that great itself.

That's a shame, Generations is a fantastic game. The modern Sonic part of it has nothing to do with nostalgia, and is extremely smooth and fun. The levels are rehashes of old ones, sure, but the actual gameplay is the best since the original series on the Mega Drive.

I'd rather see iterative, solid sequels from the Sonic series than them trying to 'innovate' like they did with O6, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic R, etc. where they clearly were just throwing random ideas at a wall and hoping something worked.
