An original Xbox is like $20 now, and original Xbox Halo is gonna be pretty reasonably priced, too. Just no online play anymore because M$oft is...yeah...

I would go with a PS2 or GameCube or XBOX and a component cable if you can.
You can still do netplay for all 3 systems via private servers. There's a wealth of games to pick from on each and bar GameCube most are very affordable.

Get Diablo 1 on the platform it was met for: the pc.
Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3
Doom I and II
Clivebarker's Undying: A VERY underrated, awesome horror themed fps. It uses the HL1 engine, you should definitely check it without a doubt. One of the best games no one ever played.
Heretic and Hexen-excellent medieval themed doom clones with awesome music
Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven
Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen

independence war 2 is one of the most awesome space sims out there, on top of that it had a great story and with mods you can make it look even better without actually making it run much slower.

also clive barkers undying should be played by any game designer enrolling in a game related field, it is that good.

When you say classic PC games that have been ported, are we talking about games like Doom?
If not then there is Unreal Tournament 2004 for PC.
Also Crysis and Crysis 2 if possible.

There is a program for newer versions of Windows which allows you to play old PC games that required DOS to run. Some of the better known titles include but not limited to Doom (I, II, SE.etc), Quake, Duke Nukem 3d, Warcraft I & II, Wolfenstein 3d, Panzer General, Sim City and the list could go on and on. The program is called DOSBox and is free to download and do to it as you wish as it is open source. I have successfully run Doom, Warcraft 2, Duke 3d, Wolf 3d and other titles I haven't played for 12+ years before getting the program. The website is : www.dosbox.com and if you need any assistance, I'll be happy to walk you through it IF you have a Windows based PC :)

Hey guitarman2010, I have DOSBox and XP Service Pack 3 and I can't make head nor tail of it, lol.
I remember something about mounting but that's honestly all I remember as I kinda stopped bothering because it got confusing and frustrating.

Don't neglect the Witcher. It'll run on a modest PC, unlike Witcher 2

Don't forget the classic action/strategy game "Star Control 2" - remade in high-res full-speech glory as "The Ur-Quan Masters".

Totally free - totally awesome. :D

I don't think that game qualifies as "classic" yet. I think he met stuff from early last decade, the 90s and maybe late 80s dos games.

When you open the application it brings you to the black screen with the command prompt. Somewhere easily accessible on your hard drive you want to make a folder for your DOS programs to sit in. For example: c:\dos (assuming your hard drive is labeled "c".

So when you open DOSBox it'll have:
Z:\>
At this prompt type in:
mount c c:\dos (hit enter)
it all should look like this: Z:\>mount c c:\dos

This should "mount" the dos folder as the hard drive

Then say you had a specific game folder located inside the dos folder (ex. Doom)

After the mounting command the next line should go something like this:

C:\>cd/doom (hit enter)
Then it'll say:
c:/doom>
Once your there you are inside the Doom folder, to execute the program just type in whatever the executable file is for the program
EX: C:/doom>doom.exe

For more information goto the wiki site for DOSBox at: DOSBox Wiki
