Most games have their fair share of cliches, but some cliches are worse than others. The two worst cliches I could think of, were the escort missions and the underwater levels.

It seems to me that pretty much any platform game has at least one underwater level. Each and everyone of these underwater levels, consist of dodging enemies that are faster than you that you can't kill, keeping a constant eye on the oxygen bar, and eventually drowning while trying to reach your destination.

Every GTA-like game used to have an escort mission. Typically, you'd need to aid a NPC with a room temperature IQ against a two digit number of thugs. This NPC would either get killed or get stuck in some geometry, which meant that you would lose because of something that wasn't your fault.

I dislike underwater levels, but I really f*cking hated the escort missions in the GTA III games.

One game where escort missions are really annoying for me is Destroy All Humans! 2.

One where underwater levels are annoying Mega Man Star Force 2.

Escort mission for sure. I mean 98% of the time you're trying to protect the dumbest AI moron ever who constantly just runs at the enemy...

TBH though, I hate forced stealth far more than either escort missions or underwater levels. By forced stealth, I mean at least 1 of 2 things: 1) stealth in non-stealth games ( I'm looking at you, Zelda ) and 2) instant game over if seen.

Underwater levels can be really awful if you have to keep coming up for air and I can't really think of any game which had an underwater level I liked but regarding escort missions essentially the last of us and bio-shock infinite were both one long escort mission however they executed it really well

I don't know about platform games but WOW has both of these. Underwater is alright because I'm usually a druid and can shapeshift into a marine animal. Other games I play such as Tomb Raider are OK generally underwater, I can hack it. I can't stand escort missions though, especially when I didn't realise it was an escort mission and my 'partner' immediately dies, and they always do stupid things too.

Escort missions for me. I usually hate them. There has been the occasional game that has managed to do them right, and maybe even managed to revolve entirely around that mechanic, while still being enjoyable, but usually, it's one of the most frustrating mission types.

there is nothing worse on a video game than having to protect a dumb AI.

Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the few that know how to do underwater levels well.

A quarter of Resident Evil 4 was pretty much an escort mission. I loved the game but Ashley made it really annoying.

Gonna go with escort missions on this one.

Escort missions....exactly because of the fact that you are expected to escort someone who is a moron that deserves to die horribly.

I can't finish Dead Island because of such a situation. A supposed bad ass tribal chief who keeps charging a bunch of dang zombies, and all the online hints say you really need more than one player to get past this point of the game...even though the game has a "single player" mode. An obvious oversight by the developers, but it breaks the game. Each time you die, you respawn with your ammo and weapons how they were when you died. You can't load a previous save to try again fresh or go back and hunt for better weapons. Game over.

That was Dead Island in general. "Single Player" was basically just "piss you off until you finally give in & play co-op"....still can't believe I actually managed to beat it solo. Traded it in shortly after...

how about those slow "auto-scroll" levels in platformers? those can be pretty bad.

God I HATE those.....also, in line with my hatred of forced stealth, I hate when a game suddenly tries to do something it should never have tried. Stealth and random macguffin collecting in Zelda, stealth in Sonic ( seriously, there's a stealth sequence in Lost World ), escort mission in Metroid Prime 3....also hate being forced to play some stupid minigame ( I'll try them if they look fun, just don't force that shtako on me )

Well every underwater level gives me headaches, I think I am getting better, but still they tend to make me feel stressed. Escort missions on the other hand are something super annoying, I guess an obvious annoyance.
