So just for nostalgia's sake, my brothers and I installed an old copy of Quake II on our computers in the house and started playing networked matches. So far, things have worked fairly smoothly but there are some issues. Most notably, despite the fact that we are just playing LAN matches, oftentimes somebody starts to lag really bad (the ping is pretty minimal too, at most 10). can anyone shed any light on why this is and how to fix it?

What operating system are you using?

Have you downloaded the 3.23 patch?

Most of the computers are running Windows 7. One of them is running Windows 8. And I'm pretty sure I have the patch downloaded and installed. Is there a way I can find out?

Running Quake2 as-is is a hopeless affair. The game was made in 1997.

You need to look into Quake 2 ports, they've been updated to work on modern computers, multi-core CPUs, they have anisotropy options, etc etc.

That's kinda what I figured. That the game wasn't made to run on such modern hardware.

Guess that means I gotta start hunting down a few unofficial patches and the like. Wish me luck! :P
