Is it just me, or is a lot of games with poor (but consistent) graphics more immersive than a lot of games with 'good' graphics. Games with 'good' graphics these days will often just have a ton of detail, but a bad sound design and bland art direction. Games with 'bad' but consistent graphics, and great design let my imagination fill in the gaps.

What ever happened to the epic over the top grandioso music like this?

Or atmospheric stuff like this:

Or this:

Rock of ages is one of the only recent games with a cool soundtrack imo.

Just think a lot of video games these days feel bland and unimaginative. Rock Of Ages being an exception.

I know what you mean, Rushking. We get these games today that seemingly paste photorealistic graphics over boring worlds, populated by annoying voice actors.

Something that infuriates me to no end is the console trend of on-screen button prompts, where the same button does everything.
Press x to open doors, press x to stealth kill, press x to change the light bulb, hack the computer etc...
Nice graphics that a lot of guys probably worked long and hard on, ruined by a gigantic prompt in the middle of the screen saying "press Y" or whatever.

If you want great music and great art style with a lot of imagination there is always Ninokuni:

There is also Zelda A Link Between World, which leave a lot to imagination with its graphics and will use orchestrated music from A Link To The Past.

the old days of gaming were bad for the absolute opposite reasons. large fields of abstract, primitive graphics were absolutely NOTHING was described or explained.

Watch the AVGN's reviews of little red hood or wayne's world to see what i mean.

In gameplay terms, the late 90's to early 2000's was possibly the time they had the balance right.

Those games, though, were anomalies, really. Keep in mind when watching those, it's AVGN: He only does videos of REALLY bad games.

Most games back in the NES days actually did not have these problems. They're not hard to figure out and it's usually quite apparent as to what is what. The REAL difference is that there's no extreme hand-holding. In games these days, you'll get some voice over like "Holy crap! Look at your controller. It has an X button on it! Press that to fire your gun! Wow, it shoots bullets! Bullets hurt things!", wheras with the older games, they dont instantly assume the player has the intelligence of a potted plant, and the intention is often that the player will actually explore and try things out on their own in order to further their understanding of the game. A player used to the hand-holding might have troubles going into those older games for that reason, as they're used to that other style.
