I no longer play traditional chess, since it favors preparation over skill. The best player is the one who memorizes ridiculous amounts of data, particularly openings. You have to devote your life to the game to be any good at it. If I ever play again, it'll only be Chess 960, aka Shuffle Chess, aka Fischer Random Chess. This is where you randomly shuffle the pieces on the back row, so that opening theory is useless and only the player's skill determines his performance.

I know the rules, but I don't know anything about how to open and can't really see long-term plays.
Allthough I have had some proud moments where I was able to trick my opponent into making an opening. I remember once I saw a move that could take one of his pieces but would leave an enormous opening. I figured he would go for that one immediately without building up his defense first.
It got him to check me, I defended and the resulting opening in his defense caused me to checkmate him.

But generally I get my ass handed to me.

Kinda hard to play without a chessboard in front of you. How about a Skype game? I am fair at it.

You can play against me with a conventional board,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_notation_(chess)
for some reason the link does not include "_(chess)". You will have to use the above link and then click on where it says chess.
Here is my favorite game! 8 move forced mate, queen sacrifice and the enemy king is forced to march all the way to Lasker's first rank!!

Do you have a rating? Do you play on any servers? (I play on ICC)

I didn't click the link to the Lasker game but it is one I enjoyed very much as a young player. It has stuck in my memory ever since and I've used it as a fun example when teaching.

Sencha,
You sound very formidable! Wanna rock? See the OP for if I am white. If you want me to take black, thats cool. I played postal chess and my top rating was (USCF) 2020.
However, that was long ago. At an OTB tournament (again long ago) I received my greatest chess related compliment. I was told that I had invented a new chess paradigm, hyper-classical! As opposed to hypermodernism. In other words, I sac pieces for the initiative even more so then Pillsbury etc. The Muzio is too tame for me! :D

Well actually it just means that becoming an expert on opening theory is a more difficult task. There are finitely many back rows, and each one has an associated opening theory.

There are too many for a human to learn explicitly, but if Random Chess ever became extremely popular, I bet that some sort of heuristic-based "training" would be invented, and it might result in an even larger gap between professionals and amateurs. At the end of the day, any deterministic game is going to favour the guy who has memorised a whole bunch of stuff.
