Probably strange, but I think that often I end up more interested in the lore of games rather than just playing it, I end up fascinated about the whole history.

It is mostly on my thoughts as I recently found some really good videos on a Youtube channel called ShoddyCast that was excellent at explaining the lore of The Elder Scrolls. Following the series I got way more information than I expected and got a big appreciation for the depth small bits of information about the different cultures.

It is not the only game series either, something I often have a recurring interest in is the lore of the Legend of Zelda series, getting Hyrule Historia was something I needed. there is just something I find interesting about the lore of a fantasy world like those in games that I become interested.

It is not just Fantasy either, I also tend to have an interest in sci-fi, and although I often get sick of reading all the little text background like in say Mass Effect, I still have an interest of looking up the important stuff, and learning how their technology is supposed to work. I don't just like acting in the game worlds, but knowing how they work.

And probably a fairly big part are horror games, I am actually a big pansy when it comes to scary games, but still I feel myself drawn in by the lore of that world. It was why I would be interested in looking at the computer messages in Doom 3, looking at all the hints of story in Silent Hill games, and learning about everything in Dead Space. Dead Space is probably a big one as at first I could barely play it long before having to stop, but I was just so interested in learning about things and managed to get through the first two games somehow, and gone through Dead Space 3 pretty well.

It is not uncommon for me to even look up videos on games I have not even played to learn about them a multi part video I saw on FF7 was quite fascinating, learning about its lore. Anyone else got an interest in learning about the lore of many games?

I love the Zelda lore. It's got plenty of small details in it across the games that lends itself atmosphere well. Kind of like One Piece (Which isn't technically a game, though there are game adaptations.).

There are other games that I wish had MORE lore to them. Like they had a lack of lore or missed opportunity for fleshing out the world. I find games like Shadow of the Colossus/Ico and Xenoblade Chronicles fall under this category.

With Skyrim, I actually found the lore infinitely more interesting than the game's story. I spent quite a bit of time reading books. TBH, I couldn't give two furry rats about the game's story. I think it's terrible. Mass Effect, on the other hand, has a good story, and compelling lore, IMHO. I love ME, because I think it's great on all fronts. Zelda's lore is fascinating, largely because there's much debate over whether there is a coherent continuity, and what it actually is. I have Hyrule Historia, and it pretty much says that Ninty's timeline is pointless, because it's subject to change with new games, and A Link Between Worlds has since been released, with a wii u Zelda game supposedly set to be unveiled at E3.

I only play games for story and lore. Fallout (series) has to be my favorite on both counts. I absolutely love The vault wiki and any bits of the Fallout Bible I can get my hands on.

The Youtube people in the video that I linked above for Elder Scrolls have also done some videos on Fallout, which is a pretty good series.

I have to agree with Fallout. In my opinion, the back-story of Fallout is the best of any computer game...

... but... what if it's not?

I like how the Warhammer Fantasy/40K lore is very dystopian, and banches of Waterstones (UK book chain) often have entire sections devoted to it.

Nice!

I'll hafta checkout some of those Fallout videos.

Another game with a really good story and decent lore is (surprisingly) Injustice: Gods Among Us.

I usually HATE fighting games, but I really enjoyed this. It probably has 4 or 5 hours of movie/cut scenes between the fights.

I think I'll probably end up reading the digital comics too. The series is good enough that's already into volume 2. Not bad for a game tie-in comic!
