How do people make YouTube videos of console games?

I know that sounds like a stupid question made by someone way behind the technological times, but how do they do it? Is there a way to hook the console up to the PC monitor and do you need a webcam or some other camera? I only know how to record myself playing things like Nintendo games on my VCR (yes, I still have a VCR).

If you want to record console games, you gotta use a console capture card. Google that and research the ones you want. Usually they plug in between the console and the tv.

Are they available in stores? I can't buy anything online, and if they are in stores which ones carry them?

the new ones(ps4/xbox 1) can upload directly. the older ones will need a capture card. you can also use capture cards with the new ones too.

Of course, it is presumably easier to record emulated games...

Or they run MAME and capture that display...

I think the most popular ones come from a company called I believe Elgato but the highest quality ones are from AverMedia.

Capture cards plug into your PC's PCI-E slot like a video card and allow you to open a window on your computer with whatever HDMI content you have the other end of the cable plugged into. Then its just a matter of using your favorite capture/streaming software (or I think the cards usually come with pretty good software) and record away.

[edit] A little googling shows that Walmart sells the Elgato cards but they are not likely available at all stores.. probably just ones in major metropolitan areas.
