I have always wanted to become good at Chess. I have played very little over the years and never read a book and tonight a friend who has played a lot and read a book beat me. I made one stupid mistake at a point when I had a potential 3 ways to have him in check which lost me the game in the long run. I feel somewhat less intelligent now, to say the least, although I am not sure how much of winning is based on intelligence and how much is based on remembering specific strategies.
Either way, do any Chess players here have any words of advice on strategy, how to improve etc?

I haven't played since my adolescent years myself, but books are a great way to start. You'll find tons of them. Memorization can only take you through the opening stage. Then you have to rely on your understanding of the game. And what a beautiful game it potentially is, as illustrated here by the young Bobby Fischer.

Thanks. I do have a book on chess that includes strategies used by the well known players. The game has always fascinated me and I was in a chess club as a child. Time to get back into it properly.

Practice, practice, practice. Play against people, it'll help. There's free apps that connect to multiplayer servers, good way to meet online friends and discuss tactics, too.
You can play on the internet through Free Chess and download an interface (my pref is babaschess). Try to find a chess club in your area, your national governing body of chess might be able to help you, in the USA it's US Chess Federation.
