I'm a fan of Jedi Outcast and that's how I got my username. I also played Jedi Academy but I haven't finished it. Jedi Outcast is possibly the best Star Wars game of all time, a timeless masterpiece. It's a pity Kyle isn't the protagonist of Jedi Academy as well.

I'd say it is the best star wars game out there besides maybe Battlefront 2. To bad Star Wars 1313 never survived development, it had the potential to make the claim. Haven't played academy yet, maybe when I've got more money and time to spare. Kyle is probably my favorite part of the now axed EU. He's still canon as far as I'm concerned.

This.

And Desann is such a a magnificent bastard that you almost start cheering for him...

I'd say you miss out on some good endgame by not completing Jedi Academy, though. I agree that the Jedi Academy protagonist (Jaden) is rather boring compared to Kyle Katarn, but otherwise it's basically the same game with even better combat mechanics...

I was deeply disappointed when The Force Unleashed came out, as I assumed it would be a spiritual successor to the Jedi Knight games... Oh, the horror...

I loved Jedi Knight to bits, but I couldn't get into Jedi Outcast because the AI was completely broken =|

I actually like the fact you could fight Kyle Katarn in Jedi Academy as the dark side.

Having said that, I believe that Jedi Outcast was superior in every way and they have Linux ports now here and here. The Linux ports seem to work great, I was going to go back and play them this way.

I never noticed this too much, can you elaborate?

The only part that seemed broken to me was the part where you have to rescue the prisoners from the AT-ST. On higher difficulties, you have about 10 seconds to do this, in some cases, the game fails you before the cut scene ends.

I only play it on Padawan difficulty, which provides a balanced challenge. The other difficulty settings are way too hard, as I tried playing on Jedi and couldn't even complete the first level.

I will try, but it's been a long time, so this might not be accurate.

Let's say I enter a room, and way on the other side are a pair of Stormtroopers on a catwalk. They notice me and start rapidly strafing left and right, firing like crazy. They can't hit me, but I can't hit them either (it auto-aims and I couldn't figure out how to disable it, so you can't even lead your target). I step backwards and let the door shut, hoping that they'll give up shooting and try to actually chase after me, but no matter how long I wait, I open the door and they're exactly where they were, and they continue their crappy dance.

I know it's a lot of work to take a game like Quake 3 and turn it into a single player game, maybe "fix the AI" was on their to-do list and they just had to keep pushing it to the bottom.

And until they released the engine source, the only source was for the multiplayer game, so modders couldn't even fix it themselves =|
