New 3DS thread: Who's buying? OG discontinued!
As you all know (or not), the Original 3DS model (not XL) has been discontinued (http://www.destructoid.com/nintendo-has-seemingly-discontinued-the-original-3ds-285771.phtml)according to retailer databases in the U.S., UK, and Japan.
This means the New Nintendo 3DS (yes that is the name) is launching soon, with announcement any day now for North America and Europe.
What does the New 3DS have over the original?
(comes in white as well)
It has:
1)Bigger battery
2)Better CPU and GPU
3)Built in NFC
4)NFC apps and Amiibo support (you can buy an NFC adapter for the original models)
5)3D tracking and much better 3D effect.
6)Built in light sensor to automatically adjust screen brightness

C-stick
9)colored buttons
10) bigger screens on the main model (XL is the same size as the old ones)
11)New home button
12)Moved start and select to better positions
13)Moved volume controls to the top screen
14)Micro SD card slot (no regular SD card slot) behind the back cover
15)Wireless transfers of data from original models
16)Game card slot is moved to the bottom half now
17)Power button moved to the bottom half now
18)Stylus on the bottom near the game card slot
19)Many current games can take advantage of the new specs

I probably will as some good friends of mine both bought one but alas I'm on a starving hacker budget for now. I can imagine some amazing exploits & mods coming soon for these, not to mention how psyched I am to finally play more SEGA titles...

I probably will get this model eventually, although I have no definite plans in the immediate future.
I haven't actually handled any sort of 3DS, but I'm concerned that increasing the screen size will decrease the portability. Reliable internet play could also be fun, particularly on a Monster Hunter game.
My problem is that Nintendo games are too expensive, and that not every game that is translated in English makes it to Australia. I hear that Nintendo has introduced region-locking, which means I'll have to consider buying an American model and ordering games on Ebay.
I own a DS Lite, and it is a brilliant toy. I have a real fondness for Nintendo products, but not their pricetags.
Currently I'm gaming on a second-hand PSP. Games are hard to find, but sometimes you can find great deals at JB-HIFI or EB-Games. I've bought games for two dollars online, but the best cheap game I own is Everybody's Tennis, which only costed five dollars. Recently I've figured out how to legally download games from the PSN, where I got Final Fantasy Eight for seven dollars and three Spyro games for five.
I'm content staying four or five years behind the technological curve. My favourite games are rpgs, and reviewers regularly complain how slow that genre is to progress.
The branding of this new product interests me, are they trying to link it to the New Super Mario Brothers series? I'm sure I'd buy this device once I can get a second-hand version for under ninety dollars, and the games for under ten. I would also start singing the Golden Ticket song if someone gave me a New 3DS as a gift.

I dont really see the point.
Normally I might say "well it'd be nice to have a second stick", but after actually SEEING it there.... yeah, I'll pass. I can tell that bit would drive me up the wall just by looking at it. Granted, I'm not fond of ANY of the handhelds and havent been in a very, very long time, but still.
If enough games should start to outright REQUIRE the new model for whatever reason, THEN I might switch, but that's ridiculously unlikely.
Currently, I've got my normal XL model, and that's functional enough. Doubt it'll be breaking anytime soon either; I dont like Nintendo as a company much at all, but I'll give them that their products are nigh-indestructible most of the time.

Currently Monster 4U gains use of the extra buttons and stick.
It also has less load times on New 3DS.
Smash Bros 3DS has almost no load times on New 3DS.
Nothing is disabled on the New 3DS when playing Smash Bros.
Many other games receive performance boosts when running on New 3DSs.
The Web Browser is now decent and supports Video and 3D videos.
There are plenty of New 3DS exclusive retail games planned according to Nintendo.
New 3DS was created due to demand from 3rd parties for a bump in specs.
The full successor to the 3DS line isn't supposed to be ready for at least 1.5 years if not longer (they are building a unified OS for both new platforms going forward).
The New 3DS is like the New GBC.
You don't have to like a company to like their products.
As of now Nintendo is the least offensive video game company in the world.
I can easily tell you enough horrible things the other gaming companies do, including Valve (They treat their workers awful and have horrible costumer services/lacking features of the other digital PC platforms) and Sony (they use blood minerals from Africa among other stuff).

Preordering one ASAP and getting day 1. They had me at longer battery life and not losing the 3D as easily...I'm hoping, likely in vain, that the New 3DS will actually acknowledge the light in the house so I can play the AR games and Spirit Camera. What the heck do they consider well lit anyways, a freaking Solar Flare attack from DBZ?

I like my NES version 3DS XL I bought last month for Christmas. But I hate how low the volume is and how I accidentally hit the home button when I open it. If they make any NES versions with this one, I will get it.

I have a XL and i don't know if i'll buy this one, at least not at launch.
The second analog stick and the hardware improvements are really nice but those things costs so much here in Brazil that unless they launch exclusives that makes me very excited to play i won't buy one of these anytime soon.
It was announced in Fall for the Japanese and AUS releases in November.

Meh, things running a bit better isnt enough, as far as I'm concerned. The load times for most things are pretty darned low as it is, also. It's not like any of these games are one of them MMOs on PC where it takes like 80 billion years to load the next zone. MH I'm not sure I'm going to buy on there. One thing I've learned from the 3DS: It doesnt take long before it starts to cause me alot of discomfort (typically the case with handhelds in general for me), and the awful stick doesnt help when that's happening. I bought the most recent MH on the Wii U instead. MH 4 I want, but... ehhhh. As far as I know it's 3DS only, and I havent decided yet if I think it's worth the trouble it's going to cause me.
And yes, you're right, you dont have to like a company to like their product; if the opposite were true, I sure as heck wouldnt have a 3DS, or a Wii U for that matter. As it is I cant say I'm too fond of many of the others. Sony and Microsoft, dont like them. I still have a PS4 though (albeit for ONE game, but that's another story) and still have a 360 as well. Valve I have no opinion on: As far as I"m concerned, Steam itself is bloody perfect, to the point where I'll attach games to it that didnt come from it, because it's convenient and I'm lazy, but Valve themselves? Feh, dont care. I dont play any of their actual games, like Half Life or whatever, and I dont follow what they do or do not do (and dont care about the stupid Steam Box that everyone never shuts up about). They just make a service client I happen to like alot.

I pre-ordered it as soon as I could, and got it the day it came out, yes it came out first here in Australia. I gave my brother my old XL.
The new stick is a curious thing, it actually does not slide, it uses some sort of touch sensitivity to pick up its use. I would say that the new game slot location is good as it feels so far that I have had less of the game coming out by accident when I keep it in sleep mode. The Wi-Fi is turned on by in game menus, which sounds difficult but is pretty easily accessible when you just have to hit home button and select that menu, makes turning it on and off more deliberate. And the 3D tracking is incredibly good, I was always frustrated by how specific I have to hold the 3DS to get 3D while now I don't and can look at it easily.

I got the Blue XL 3DS just this Christmas. I'm glad I didn't get the original one. Let's face it, the game companies always release new or improved consoles after everyone buys the old ones, and then they become obsolete and you end up spending more money just because you want to experience the further adventures of the Mario Bros. or Pikmin or whatever. After the Wii I decided to give up on new consoles but handheld ones don't really count as they're cheaper, portable, and Nintendo is pretty reliable when it comes to handhelds like the Game Boy.
Consoles rarely get improved revisions.
Though Microsoft did give the Xbox 360 multiple revisions fixing hardware defects.
Sony gave the different PS3 models faster blu-ray drives.
PS2 received numerous revisions improving the faulty hardware.
Wii received 2 revisions, each one took features out that consumers didn't use such as Gamecube BC and WIFI, thus allowing a drop in price.
Though when it comes to handhelds:
Gameboy had 4 revisions (including GBC).
GBA had three main revisions and a model for Ford cars.
PSP had 6 revisions which was smaller than the DS's 4 revisions.
3DS has 3 revisions if you include the XL models, if you don't include the XL modes then it is 1.
VIta is beat the 3DS to a full revision.
