How does one get better at button mashing?

I am several achievements away from completing Blue Dragon on the 360, I cannot get past the third boss battle in Killer is Dead on the 360, and try as I might, I cannot even rip the head off a mere Minotaur in God of War on the PS2. My button mashing skills totally suck, and I want to improve them. I do not want to cheat by using a lighter, spoon or (god forbid) a modded controller. I want to build this skill up.

The question is..... how? What's the best way to practice?

This is rather embarrassing.

I recommend using the "fighting game" controller grip, i.e. keeping your thumb off the buttons, and using your index/trigger finger for the tapping.

How are you doing it? If you're actively lifting your thumb all the way off the button each time, it's going to slow you down.

I usually just put my thumb up against whatever needs to be hit really fast and then sorta vibrate my wrist; leads to a very fast tapping.

Yeah, I have been lifting my thumb a couple of millimeters off the button. I should work on not doing that anymore.

That's what I do whenever I need to button mash really fast.

...I always wonder why people do this.

I dont, and I'm usually the one doing the winning.

I started doing this for Tekken: Dark Resurrection. I have big hands, my thumb would always mash multiple buttons on the tiny PS2 controllers we would plug into the arcade cabinets. Its especially useful for buffering inputs, and doing stuff like "left punch +right kick".
