A guy at work offered me his Xbox 360, one controller and around 12 games (he said he couldn't remember exactly how many) for $300. I think it might be a good deal depending on what those games are, so I just asked him and I am waiting for a response. And also whether or not it has a hard drive. He says he originally got the system itself for $275.

Play it for ten minutes to see it goes

Also keep in mind it might die from the red ring of death (RROD)

Look on eBay to compare and see if it is a good deal in your area

He said he can give it to me and that I can pay him after we get our checks which is in about a week, so if it craps out before then I can always just return the stuff and not pay him.

Also he says it has a 320 gb hard drive, but he has not sent me a list of the games yet. 320 is definitely enough for me so as long as the thing works I think it is probably a good deal.

He says he doesn't play it anymore because he got one of the newer systems (Xbox One I think).

I wouldnt go for it. A 360 isnt worth even remotely close to that amount by itself. Not even close.

Hell, it's even cheap as heck at freaking Gamestop, and their prices are TERRIBLE most of the time. They have one bundle right now which is the 360 (used) with 11 games (also used, so it's similar to what you're being offered)..... and it's about $130. And honestly, even then, that sounds a bit high to me. Comes with a controller, obviously. And note, the games in this bundle are all well-known, popular stuff... the thigns that fetch higher prices as a rule.

Some might say "but what about the harddrive?", and I respond with "they're not that expensive either, and you dont need 50 billion gigs of space". I had a 20GB one, and a ton of games. I never came close to running out. But yeah, that part isnt pricey anymore either.

I'd say, if the guy were giving it to you closer to $100, then yes. It'd be worth it. But at 300? Heck no. Not at all.

I see what you're saying. I looked at that gamestop bundle, that's a way better deal. I might just get that one instead, if I do end up deciding I want one.

But in that case I could also look at a PS3 instead. The thing is I haven't personally owned any of the Sony or Microsoft game systems. I've always been way more into Nintendo. So I don't know which of the two would be better.

I think The console you get should be based on what games you want to play. For 360 and ps3 there's a great lineup of past games that are really good. While current gen consoles let u do things that aren't possible on 360 and ps3.

I would say its not such a good deal. I bought a "Gamestop Refurbished" X360 for less than $100 over a year ago.If you have $300 to spend on a 360, get a new one, as they can be unreliable. The clincher would be the games. If you want the particular games in this deal, then it might be worth it.

You should have no trouble finding good ps3/360 games on ebay

I was thinking the same thing, that it probably depends on the game selection I want. But then the next question is what game selection I want. I don't actually know what games are on each system, let alone which ones I'd like more. I do have a laptop PC that is capable of playing games, and though I haven't found it's limit on games it can and can't run, it isn't actually a gaming laptop. It has a quadcore processor and 4 GB of RAM (which is decent, but unfortunately I can't upgrade the RAM on it; it pisses me off because the Best Buy representative told me I could for this laptop too, and I didn't discover this until quite a while after buying it when I actually had the money to upgrade the RAM and found it wasn't possible). I don't really know how good the graphics card is. It's not crappy, I can play games like Skyrim on it just fine (at medium detail). I don't know how well it would play newer games.

I don't know if having a PC to play games would change anything though, as I think games that are only available for Xbox 360 or PS3 would probably be exclusive to those systems anyway.

Google "best games for ps3" for example

Also for new consoles Google "most anticipated games"

Maybe Google "most underrated games ps3" etc

Best to look up exclusives and such when trying to decide.

I cant think of all that much that's very unique on these, aside from LittleBigPlanet on the PS3, and both of those games on there are now outdone by the third game that just came out. The 360 is.... mostly FPS. That's what it's known for, that's what it does. If you dont love that genre, it's probably not the one to pick. Though the PS3 has a ton of those too, but it does have more things like JRPGs if you like those.

Neither console is particularly unique though. With the same types of games in the same genres copying each other and repeating over and over and over and over and over again, there's less of a difference than ever between the two.

My own 360 is a Japanese unit and is only used to play imported shmups that I've collected for it... there's just nothing else I find interesting on the stupid thing, so that's all I have. My PS3 is similar, but even less used; most of the time I dont know where the stupid thing is, and dont care enough to look, particularly since I now have the PS4 (which I own entirely just to have LittleBigPlanet 3). I dont do FPS games and LOATHE the JRPG genre, so these things are useless to me aside from the imports.

Well, there's also games along the lines of God of War, but those too are all just clones of each other. There's also fighting games, but there's little point in picking any of those up unless you're really into the genre; they're all about multiplayer competition and the singleplayer content is almost universally terrible.

Normally I like to give game recommendations to people, but I have none for these two devices. I really hated the Wii more than any other console I've ever seen, but if you want actual variety and can tolerate the thing's stupid arm-waving, just stick with that if you have one.

As for the PC, that depends on what type of games you're after. There's a nearly infinite number of them.... unless you're only sticking to the "big" ones, the sorts that appear on consoles. In which case, they're nearly identical to the console versions (and *alot* of the games on consoles can be found on PC; there's exceptions like Halo and LBP, but these exceptions are getting more and more rare), and there's not that many of them. I dont like the trends that prevail among "mainstream" games these days (really easy, really linear, so many cutscenes that you watch the game more than play it, obsession with graphics... sigh), so outside of indie games, I have no recommendations on those either. But I can say that 4 GB of RAM often wont cut it very well with the major titles.

Whatever you do, just be sure to research the heck out of it before making a purchase, so you dont regret it later.

^Yeah, I figured this laptop wouldn't work well for newer games.

I think I'm leaning towards the PS3. I like FPS games, but I wouldn't say I'm really into them, and I wouldn't mind having less of a selection of them, as I doubt I'll ever spend much on them anyway. I'd definitely pick RPGs over them.

I also want a Wii U, but that's gonna be more expensive, which is why I wanted to get one of these systems first. I don't have a Wii, but if I plan on getting a Wii U there's really no point in getting one, unless I want the Gamecube backwards compatibility (in which case I could just get an actual Gamecube).

^^If you want RPGs, X360 is nothing more than a barren wasteland. $300 can probably buy a lot of PS3.

Misery made a good point on checking for exclusives as well
