Hello.

I played my first strategy board game (Agricola) this past weekend. It was a totally different atmosphere than some other board games I've played in the past; it got pretty serious and intense fairly quickly, which is understandable. I had fun, but it'll definitely take me at least a few more times to get the hang of it.

So, what strategy games have you played and which do you recommend for a beginner like myself? What games don't you like and why not?

I like Warhammer 40k. Then again, its not really a board game.

I'd love to get into this sort of thing, but there's nobody that is at all interested anywhere near me. It's pretty annoying.

I'm not into strategy games myself, I prefer party games. So I asked my friend (who runs a boardgaming event that I go to) which he thinks are the best strategy games for beginners and he said:

Cacassonne - "quite light and is like competitive jigsaw-puzzling"
Pandemic & Forbidden Desert (co-operative games) - "good because everyone is working together"
Settlers of Catan - "some human interaction that other strategy games don't have"
Machi Koro - "a light strategy game that is very popular right now".

I have found it difficult to find people to play strategy board games. I've owned Axis and Allies for years, and have only played it a handful of times. It might help if I got something that didn't take all night to set up, and all day to play, though. :|

I'm a huge board game fan. Here's a link to my collection:

A group of us gets together at least once a month to play these kinds of games.
