Fangames
So, if any of you are familiar with fangames at all, what do you think of these sorts of things?
In my quest to play a ton of Mario games before Mario Maker comes out, partly because I"ve been bored lately, I sometimes come across a variety of fangames... IE, Mario games not made by Nintendo, but by fans, naturally... and there sure seem to be alot of them. Many of course are just.... terrible. There are tons of hilarious videos of stuff like these. But sometimes you run into some that are REALLY good. I've been playing Super Mario Bros X recently, which is made by the same guy that did Terraria, and THAT is a quality game. It also ends up being something like Mario Maker (with it's huge editor), except VERY complicated and with every conceivable object from the series in it; I'm very slowly learning to use it (and playing through the worlds that came with it), since I love doing level design, and along with Mario Maker when that comes out, I'm expecting much fun and hilarity and am likely to use both equally, as I tend to do in such situations. But yeah, it's not Nintendo's doing, that one.
I've heard of alot of Sonic ones as well, a few of which I've heard described as quite good, others described as fantastically terrible.
Now, I figure, there's probably some shaky legal grounds on all of this, but... the companies that own the IPs seem to very rarely actually DO anything about it; I figure, they've got bigger fish to fry, more important things to do. But shaky legal stuffs indeed, or so I assume, so that can bug some people quite a bit.
But yeah, anyone have any experience with anything like this? Are there any good ones (related to any series), or any that are just bad in a completely hilarious way that makes them worth messing with? After seeing a bunch lately, I'd kinda like to find more to mess with, as good or bad, they've so far turned out to be pretty entertaining one way or another. Not to mention they can make me want to have a go at the actual games in the related series; after I beat SMBX's main worlds, I think I'm going to run through SMB 3 and Mario World as well, since it plays and feels extremely similar to those. And I havent played through those in a long time.
