Wii U Advice
I would like to get a Wii U, but unsure how multiplayer works. (Myself, Girlfriend, Son)
I would assume 1 player uses the "GamePad" and the others use Wii Motes?..
Where do Wii U Pro Controllers fit in to the mix?
Are nunchucks still used with the Wii U?
I assume we would be mostly playing Wii U games, but may get some older Wii games.
It entirely depends on the game, and many games dont force you to use the gamepad. When playing Smash, the recent one for the Wii U, not Brawl that was on the Wii, both me and my friend use the.... er.... Gamecube replica controllers, I've no idea what they're officially called. Same when I play that game by myself, I just use that.
When multiplayer games do use the Gamepad though, only one person can do so; you cannot sync up a second one to it or something.
And of course there are some games that ONLY use the gamepad, like Splatoon. Cant use other controllers there.... except in one-on-one multiplayer locally, where it plays a bit differently and doesnt really require a minimap to be on the gamepad's screen, so both types of controllers are viable. Other than that though, it's gamepad only.
Games from the original Wii, as far as I know, do not support or allow gamepad use whatsoever, not even as a stand-in for a non-Wiimote controller. You do need a proper Wiimote to play those. Using things like the Gamecube replica ones, which work for Wii-U stuffs, also require the Wiimote, which is annoying.
Very few multiplayer games (or games for that matter) make exclusive use of the gamepad
These multiplayer games require the gamepad:
*Nintendoland (for some mini games)
*ZombiU
*New Super Mario Bros (one mode of the game)
*Super Mario 3D World (for certain levels)
*Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (One player must use the gamepad)
*Splatoon (One player must use the gamepad)
*Wii Party U (for some modes)
*Wii Sports Club Baseball (Pitcher uses the gamepad) and Golf (uses it for swinging) the rest of the sports use it for Miiverse posting.
*Hyrule Warriors (for multiplayer only)
*Game & Wario
*Mario Party 10
There probably a few others that I am missing
These single player games and apps on top of those I listed, require the gamepad:
*Netflix
*Hulu
*Super Mario Maker (out this coming Friday)
*Yoshi Wooly World (October and only use it for Amiibos)
*Xenoblade Chronicles X (Comes out December)
*Fatal Frame V (October, available digitally only)
*Animal Crossing; Amiibo Festival (This holiday)
*Lego City Undercover (Wii U game)
*Art Academy (and sketchpad)
*Mass Effect 3:SE (though no DLC)
*FIFA and Madden from 2012
*Just Dance (I hear it does)
*Wii Fit U
*The new lego games
*Skylanders
*Legend of Zelda: WindWaker HD
*Captain Toad: Treasure Trackers
*DS Virtual Console games (most of them)
Other games I can't think of at the moment
The gamepad is also required to take full advantage of Miiverse, the web browser (it's actually quite decent), and the system settings menu (only works with gamepad)
Anyways check the back of the box before purchasing to see what controllers and accessories are compatible.

I tried to make this thread easier to read...
Oh also if you decided to wait to Wednesday or later, rumor has it Apple is planning to unveil TV 4 with full gaming capabilities that may or may not blow the PS4 out of the water graphic wise for $150 and $199. It will have full multimedia capabilities including being able to buy cable and satellite channels individually through said network directly.
All is to be unveiled at the huge press event this Wednesday in San Francisco.
TVs fully use your iTunes account while being able to fully sync with your devices (including Macs)

I'm going to guess that alot of developers just arent really making all that much use out of it so far?
It was never required.
though the list is longer, I just can't remember all the games that require it.
Many have it as an option with added features.

That's how most games work, yeah. In Nintendoland, a lot of the games involve passing the gamepad around to different players.
If you don't already have Wiimotes, I suggest finding the ones with Motion Plus inside, as quite a few games require it. I've managed to pick up some cheap and/or bundled ones over the years.
I don't have one, but I assume some games let you use one in place of the gamepad, and I think most games let you use one in place of the old Pro Controllers (the ones that plugged into Wiimotes).
Yes.
There's some really great Wii games out there, but they're getting to be much harder to find. Every time I peek at GameStop, it seems like it's mostly shovelware.
You can play GameCube games on the WiiU too, but it requires the Homebrew Channel, and the process is a gigantic pain in the neck (or at least it used to be, I haven't checked for updates).
Some of the downloadable games do. I know Xenoblade Chronicles does, but I think Reggie's being Reggie (translation: not released in America).

Actually all Wii games including Wiiware and VC allows you to use the gamepad as the screen.
You can also use the built in sensor bar in the gamepad to use Wii remotes.
Wii games that you download from the Wii U eShop use a Wii U wrapper (it's a form of code) to use the gamepad and launch from the Wii U menu.
Lastly Reggie has very little say on what is released in North America, nearly all the decisions are made in Japan with help from market research.
NoA is most likely holding back the release to allow 3DS version space to sell.
If they release the eShop version, it will take a huge cut of the 3DS version's sale.
Also a new Mario Kart 8 bundle was announced today for North America

It comes with Mario Kart 8 and Nintendoland installed and the card with the codes to download the DLC packs.
This is all for $299.99 (far worth the value)

We were talking about the fact that you can't use the gamepad as a controller for (most) Wii games. Yes, you can use the screen, and the sensor bar, but I can't imagine it would have been that hard to enable it to "emulate" a Gamecube or Classic controller.
It feels so natural, that I always get taken by surprise when that message pops up, telling you that you can't use it. Having to prop it up on a stand and point a Wiimote at it, not quite as practical.
I know, but it's a lot more fun to blame Reggie, especially when Europe keeps getting everything years before we do.

Actually, Nintendo would literally have to issue an update for each Wii game in existence to allow for the gamepad to be utilized as a controller when streaming to the gamepad.
Many if not most Wii games aren't programmed to receive updates.
Wii doesn't have a true OS, leaving all the controller drivers as part of each games code.
The EU folks still complain about how bad they are treated compared to us in North America by Nintendo.
