Does anyone here still play? I've been getting back into it lately, though I've just been playing against bots since it's hard to find good vanilla servers these days. I used to LAN it all the time with my friends. IMO, it's an extremely fun, timeless game, and it's a refreshing change from modern multiplayer shooters. Sadly, I could never quite get the trickjumping down. Here's an awesome video I found of some insanely skilled trickjumpers in action
link for non-Flash users: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc3EzAVdvcI
Note that in the second half of the video, CPM physics are used instead of vanilla Quake 3 (or VQ3) physics. CPM is a competitive ruleset that rebalances the weapons and allows for more air control, among other changes. Myself, I've never really been a fan of CPM or many of the other popular mods, but it's still impressive to see in action.
BTW, does anyone know of a good server browser I could use? I'm using the latest x86_64 version of ioquake3.
Also, if you want to play give Quake 3 a try, I highly recommend checking out this guide, as it'll help you get it running in 1080p. Personally, I actually run it in 4:3 1440x1080, since the engine merely chops off the top and bottom of the viewport for widescreen. This means that you actually see more running in a 4:3 resolution than in 16:9, unlike modern game engines. Since Quake 3 has a lot of vertical gameplay, this is a very important thing to consider. To run in 1440x1080, add it as a custom resolution in your GPU's drivers, and set it as your resolution in the HD config file using a program like notepad++.

There's also a link to an HD texture pack, which slightly spruces up the look of the game's graphics. The most noticeable change is the addition of extra particle effects for the railgun and plasma rifle.
Hey mr_bigmouth_502, Whats your steam?
I would post mine but I have some haters that are out to get me over something I didn't even do on another forum and would rather not have that drama on steam like I have everywhere else. I guess I don't need your steam if you want to just do ioquake3 but I am down for a few matches if you want. I thought I knew your steam cause I recall seeing it but I guess not, I am not stalking you but I see you everywhere from vogons to youtube to deviantart, I just ignore it a lot and don't say hi lol.
I can open ports and can host on my side and I have 100 Mbps down and 20 up so I should be able to host no problem.
Let me know here or PM if you want to play, I am not the best player at quake but I am okay.

My Steam is the same as my wrongplanet name, "mr_bigmouth_502" (without quotes). For a while I had it set to "the R8 nerf blows" because I was upset with Valve nerfing that gun on CS: GO, but I don't really care about CS: GO anymore.
BTW, I apologize for not catching you earlier on.
I never cared much for Q3, I thought UT was a lot better. I thought it was kind of okay, and some of the custom maps were nice, we had a couple decent LAN sessions, but that was it.
I'm sure you already know this, but I think a lot of people moved onto Quake Live. I know a bunch of people were upset about some changes they made to the game though, and I've heard you can't run custom maps in it.

UT is pretty awesome, and while I do agree that it's better than Q3 in a lot of ways, I still think that Q3 has better physics and FFA gameplay. UT really shines for the sheer amount of variety it has, as well as its teamplay, mods, and weapons, the former two which it does way better than Q3 IMO. It's also more accessible than Quake 3 since you don't need to know how to trickjump to compete online.
I'm really torn between the two games since I love both of them, and have spent countless hours on them. I love Quake 3's "feel", but I think it's hampered by a poor teamplay implementation, as well as a lack of good mods or overall variety outside of basic deathmatch. UT on the other hand has tons of variety, with awesome mods, maps, game modes, and weapons, and a kickass teamplay implementation, but it's missing that "feel" Quake 3 has with its fun physics and movement.
Anyway, I know that a lot of people have moved to Quake Live, and I remember playing it a little bit back in beta, but I didn't like a lot of the changes it brought, namely how they censored the gore and Satanic references, or how they removed the ability to make custom servers. Also, like a few other games I've enjoyed (namely Counter Strike and Starcraft), they really went overboard with making it into an e-sport, and I personally hate it when they do that. I like multiplayer games that are fun, informal, and a bit on the unbalanced side, I don't like it when they get all serious and start sucking the fun out to appeal to cyberathletes.
Hey mr_bigmouth_502,
We should try some of the maps here if your interested, also Merry Christmas, I was meaning to tell you that but I didn't get a chance to. I am going to be out of Nashville soon but should be back by Monday, because of this I without a gaming rig and I am left with a crap Laptop. I can probably still do quake III on this rig but we should probably just game more after Christmas.
Peace man,
I'm quite fond of Quake 3. All the Quakes actually. And the Dooms. And other Doom engine games.
But yeah, Quake 3. Can't say I'm very good at it. Can only really compete with Hardcore difficulty bots except Xaero because he just rails the hell out of me on that really open map. I'm running the game plus Team Arena on the original engine and in 1280x1024, since that's the shape of monitor I've got.
Catch the Chicken for IOQuake3 is pretty rad. Haven't played that for some time though.
This map is insane, I remember it lagging our computers a little bit: http://lvlworld.com/review/id:1743

http://lvlworld.com/review/id:793 After learning that Iikka worked on Thief 2, I can really see it in this map.
Man, I remember these maps looking amazing back when they came out...now guys like Sock are putting out Quake ONE maps that look ten times better.

I don't remember which maps we enjoyed the most (I mean besides Blood Run), I basically just downloaded every map my online friends had made and wanted to look through them.
With friends.
And rocket launchers.

It's funny this has come up. Because I recently got a craving to play this type of game. I ordered Unreal Tournament 3 off Amazon, but while I was waiting for that, I turned my attention to Quake.
Now, I have these games on consoles, in the case of Quake, it's Quake III Revolution. And for you PC players in order to do what I am going to show you, I guess you need Team Arena as well to be able to do it. Because what I did is create a series of challenges based on the challenges of Perfect Dark and started running through them while I waited for Unreal Tournament 3 to show up. So I'll share the list, which I'm going to have to type up since I wrote it down and put it in the game box so I could check them off as I go.
If you like, just Google Perfect Dark Challenges to see where the inspiration comes from. They range from incredibly easy to sadistically hard. If anyone tries them, I'd love to know how you get on with them!
I don't know how many bots Quake III on PC allows you, but the PS2 only allows you 5. So I've only done challenges with up to 5 bots. Any that would require more are not included.
If something isn't compatible, like a map that doesn't exist on PC or something, feel free to substitute it. Well, feel free to change anything you want, it’s your game!
So I'll list the first one and show you what it means:
1. Team Deathmatch, Arena Gate - 1 - 5F / 1 - 10F / 1,1 - 10F / 1,1 - 10F
So game mode and map should be obvious. The numbers refer to bots and bot difficulty. On the PS2 the bots come in 5 difficulties. 1 is the easiest. F is the number of frags to win. It will be the number of flags to capture in a flag map or an M to signify minutes to hold in a possession match. The / separate challenges. In Perfect Dark, there were single player, 2 player, 3 player and 4 player challenges. So that's what the / signify. Use ally bots if you don't have people to play with. You can have the level of your allies whatever you choose. So to be clear, it goes: Just you / you and 1 ally / you and 2 allies / you and 3 allies.
So to be clear, for the first challenge, 1 - 5F is you vs a 1 level bot, 5 frags to win. / 1 - 10F is you and an ally bot vs a 1 level bot, 10 frags to win. / 1,1 - 10F is you and 2 ally bots vs 2 1 level bots. And / 1,1 - 10F is you and 3 ally bots vs 2 1 level bots. Of course, this is incredibly easy and I wouldn't blame anyone for skipping the first batch entirely, for me, they were great to break myself back into this kind of gameplay as it's been a really long time since I've played this genre of game. Oh, and if there's an A next to a bot, this is an ally on top of any allies you might normally get. This only applies in a couple of the challenges.
So, here's the full list:
1. Team Deathmatch, Arena Gate - 1 - 5F / 1 - 10F / 1,1 - 10F / 1,1 - 10F
2. Team Deathmatch, Place of Many Deaths - 1 - 5F / 1,1 - 10F / 1,1 - 15F
3. Team Deathmatch, House of Pain - 1,1 - 10F / 1,1 - 15F / 1,1,1 - 20F
4. Team Possession, Place of Many Deaths - 2 - 2M / 2,1 - 2M / 2,2 - 2M
5. Team Deathmatch, Power Station 0128 - 2 - 10F / 2,1 - 20F / 2,1,1 - 25F
6. Team Possession, Brimstone Abbey - 1,1,1,1 - 3M / 1,1,1,1 - 3M
7. Team Possession, Hero’s Keep - 2 - 3M / 2,1 - 3M / 2,2 - 3M / 2,2 - 3M
8. Capture The Flag, The House of Decay - 2 - 5F / 2,2 - 5F / 2,2,1 - 5F
9. Team Deathmatch, Arena of Death - 3 - 10F / 3 - 20F / 3,1 - 25F / 3,2 - 30F
10. Capture The Flag, The House of Decay - 2 - 5F / 3,2 - 5F / 3,2,2 - 5F
11. Team Possession, Space Chamber - 3 - 5M / 3,3 - 5M
12. Team Deathmatch, Temple of Retribution - 4 - 5F / 4,3 - 10F / 4,3,2 - 15F
13. Team Deathmatch, Brimstone Abbey - 3 - 10F / 4,2 - 20F / 4,2,2 - 25F
14. Capture The Flag, Temple of Pain - 3,2 - 5F / 3,2,2,2 -5F
15. Team Possession, Place of Many Deaths - 3,1 - 5M / 4,3,1 - 5M
16. Team Deathmatch, The Forgotten Place - 5 - 10F / 5,3 - 20F / 5,4,1 - 25F
17. Team Possession, Brimstone Abbey - 5 - 5M / 4,2,1,1 - 5M / 5,3,2 - 5M
18. Team Possession, Brimstone Abbey - 5,1 - 5M / 5,4 - 5M / 5,4,1 - 5M
19. Team Deathmatch, Hero’s Keep - 4,2 - 10F / 5,5 - 20F / 5,4,3 - 25F
20. Team Deathmatch, Camping Grounds - 4,A3 - 10F / 5,4,A3,A3 - 20F
21. Capture The Flag, Temple of Pain - 4 - 5F / 4,3 - 5F / 4,3,2 - 5F
22. Team Possession, Hero’s Keep - 5,3 - 5M / 5,3,2 - 5M / 5,4,3 - 5M
23. Team Deathmatch, The Nameless Place - 4,4 - 5F / 5,5 - 10F / 5,5,4 - 10F
24. Capture The Flag, Space CTF - 2,2,2,2 - 5F / 3,3,2,2 - 5F
25. Team Deathmatch, Lost World - 5,4 - 10F / 5,5,4 - 20F
26. Team Possession, Hero’s Keep - 5,4 - 5M / 5,5,4,2 - 5M
27. Capture the Flag, Space CTF - 5 - 5F / 5,5 - 5F / 5,5,5 - 5F
28. Capture the Flag, Duelling Keeps - 5,5 - 5F / 5,5,5 - 5F
29. Team Deathmatch, The Longest Yard - 5,5 - 10F / 5,5,5 - 20F
30. Team Possession, Space Chamber - 5,5,A3 - 5M / 5,5,5,A3 - 5M
For keeping track of these, I put a tick over the challenges I’d beaten that were by myself, and up to 5 ticks depending on the level of the ally bots I had for challenges I’d beaten with allies. For keeping track on the computer, I suppose you could just type up what you had accomplished in a list underneath. Do it any way you want to.
Before Unreal Tournament 3 turned up, I cleared challenges 1-11 and 13 single player, everything in the first 8 challenges and challenges 10, 11 and 14 with 1 level ally bots and the 1 ally and 2 ally challenges of 9 with 1 level bots. I was trying to beat 14 single player when Unreal Tournament 3 took over, which I’m thoroughly enjoying.
I’ve tried to be as clear as I can about what everything means, but if anyone’s still confused about anything, just ask and I’ll try and clear it up.
Enjoy!
Oh, and I'll probably at some point do the same thing I did with Quake with one or both of Timesplitters 2 and Timesplitters Future Perfect, if anyone's interested in that, you might want to let me know.
