Not sure if this has been talked about it likely has. Im a huge supporter and really love the game, it'll likely consume the next 10 years of my life.

To sum it up, Starcitizen is a simulation of living a science fiction fantasy life in space crossed with space flight sim seamless transition between landing and leaving your ship then walking around on the surface of where your ship was landed. Its the full package, think Battlestar Galactica.

The game is heavily in development and barely entering alpha state at this time, near the end of this year planet side landings are being added which should be amazing including atmospheric flight and entry. Economy and such which i know many people get into is slowly being implemented, the game also features large multicrew ships the biggest being measured to 2kms long 'likely not player usable in game' but the biggest player useable will be anywhere up to 1.5kms in length taking a full crew compliment of somewhere around 1000 this is actual players. The game is being built on the cryengine massively altered.

Already theres some multcrew ships, the largest was recently added the Starfarer which takes roughly about 10 players but more is possible it includes a proper bridge and is 3 decks in size. Its basically a ship meant for collecting fuel resources from stars and maybe gas giants.

My clan is also open to recruits if anyone has been looking https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/SERTCO

You can read more about Starcitizen here https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

Oh yes, Mark Hamill and Gillian Anderson also have performed greenscreen acting which was digitised for the single player campaign.

I'm interested in the game but I have no interest to put any money into it until it releases in full. Until then I'm happy playing Elite Dangerous. I'm glad that these types of games are making a comeback; I never understood why they went away.

After all of the controversy, nasty moves, and EXTREME greed by the devs (I mean, seriously... holy crap, even EA isnt as greedy as these guys), I have a TON of things holding me back on this one, and... to be honest, every expectation of this being a failed project that does not become anything like what it's meant to. This developer is just WAY too "all over the place" and screwy to trust.

It's that greed aspect that gets me more than anything else though. I've seen this from developers and publishers before... but never, not ONCE, to the utterly ridiculous degree that these guys have pushed it to. What's even worse is watching people try to defend that aspect. I know people can be a little blinded by spectacle, and can thusly become what I call "rabid fans" of upcoming games. The definition for "rabid fan" being a fan that is no longer capable of REALLY understanding or even noticing highly probable flaws, and yet capable of absolutely deceiving themselves into thinking that it has no flaws; this phenomenon existed even back in the Golden Age of arcades, such as with Dragon's Lair fans, who would always refuse to admit that the game was what it actually was: A series of memory tests. They'd do anything to convince you that it was so much more, but it just wasnt... that, is a "rabid fan". This is one of those games capable of generating that type of fanbase. LONG before it even releases. But it wouldnt be so bad if what these players were trying to defend was simple gameplay elements, but no, they defend the batshit insane prices that these devs stick on things like fake virtual video game ships. THAT is pretty freaking bad. You may as well try to defend EA and Activision by trying to convince people that they are some sort of group of holy saints known for their generosity. Though, honestly? Compared to the sheer greed seen here, EA and Activision ARE a bunch of holy saints.

But how will the game itself turn out? Impossible to know for sure. I personally dont foresee it as being all that good, or at least, not up to the expectations that people have for it (kinda like how Miner Wars turned out; it's not a BAD game, definitely not, but it's very, very, VERY much not what it was originally promised to be. The good thing was that it served as the foundation for Space Engineers). But even a greedy, screwball developer like this could pull off a winner. It's certainly possible.

Now, as for the actual GAMEPLAY? The ship stuff would be interesting to me. The FPS stuff would be a huge turnoff. Like, an "I'm not bothering with this" sort of turnoff. If it's somehow possible to... utterly and completely skip that part, I'd be interested. Though the other thing that'd be a big issue for me is multi-crew ships. Not for gameplay reasons, just... you know... social anxiety. I has it. Badly. Also I'm not good at taking orders and even worse at giving them.

But as Enigmatic_Oddity says, I've never entirely understood why games like Elite Dangerous and whatnot ever fell out of favor. Aside from the fact that devs as a whole just... stopped making them, for whatever reason.

First of all do you even know who Chris Roberts is? If you grew up in the 90's you would. Wing Commander is one of the most famous PC games ever made particularly as it pushed what was possible in terms of gaming of the day to its limit.

I hope you've not been reading Derek Smarts writings as little of it has truth he's well known for his smearing campaigns. One of the top Hollywood concept artists was hired to create some of the ship concepts Ryan Church.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Church_(concept_artist)

This guys done work on Star Wars movies. I'd say he wasn't cheap. Also surely youve noticed the lack of advertising?

Chris Roberts cocreated freelancer which still has a strong community to this day. He's hardly who you portray him as. Its my understanding once the mmo has released as retail since their effectively making two games almost all ships for cash sale will be removed from the store with only starter ship packs left because that's pretty normal for any mmo. The reason the ships cost so much is its to support the huge cost of creating a triple a game with a lot of staff and talent , people don't work for free. Those that spend these ridiculous sums of money are often twitch streamers or head mega clans and to them its worth the upfront investment. Read up on Clifford miku sometime as an example this guy supports many games and streams for a living. I still remember early on in development a native american indian who's a head of a huge roleplaying company in the us when i say roleplaying I mean like table top presented cr a special handmade engraved blade in support of his vision. Youd really have to read around the forum to understand the sorts of ppl following this and why. Then there's ben lesnick whos a long time friend of CR's due to his love of freelancer and becoming somewhat of a senior freelancer community member. The game was originally intended to be only a space flight sim in the same mold as wing Commander but modern things kind of exploded.

another aspect to this, I've personally spent over $500 nz but this is not at all in a single purchase. It has a very fair pledge system where backers can claim there pledge/s back as store credits using a system known as melting where the store credits can then be used to buy anything digital. This can be done unlimited times. So what I did was brought a $5 skin now and then adding to the value I already had over time it built up. I'm hoping once the mmo goes retail they add a non ship player pack which means people can buy a game starter cheaper and earn their first ship in game. Additionally I'd say there's a good chance more ships will be added after retail release so its not like what ppl have now will be the only and best ships in game. The only other thing that will remain for cash is buying uee credits for lazy ppl and Asian gold farmers everything with the exception of any physical items such as tshirts will be earnable in game maybe just cosmetics payable for like a drink cabinent lol. Think of how guild wars worked.

Now I can tell you this with 100% certainty. If after retail release of the mmo CR does not honor his word and pulls some odd excuse to leave many ships at insane prices on the store not only will half the games community now counted at over 1mill players leave I'd say CIG will have a law suite on their hands which would destroy the company by 1000's of pissed off backers due to CR not honoring his promise. And by that I mean pay2win. If CR did that his career in the games industry since 1980 something would be over. He's well respected.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Roberts_(game_developer)

He's also had some involvement in movies http://m.imdb.com/name/nm0730932/

Admitably the wingcommander movie was a box office flop but each to their own sales don't really show if a movie is good or not. I think the single biggest reason ppl assume Starcitizen is some sort of p2w scam is because they don't really understand the cost and that the game is being developed soley with those funds there's no 3rd party investors involved at all. The cost of Google cloud fibre alone is enough to stress one out. In some random twitch stream one night someone told me CIG push TB's of data between offices around the globe monthly. This is huge for fibre commercially. I won't even start on the cost of office and building lease. If anything I'd be more worried they will run out of cash. Let's say squadron 42 flops on release this would be bad.

So please for a moment think of companys like rockstar and how many millions they blow on advertising alone, considering a huge chunk of what has been raised is going on core development inc peoples wages not advertising I'd say that's quite impresive. For triple a development $120ish mill is a small budget not counting what's already been spent. If funding dropped off tomorrow couple months tops and it'd be over. Now let's factor in r&d as well as the cryengine is basically being completely rewritten because the game basically won't work otherwise. If you want to learn on the tech side of what their doing read around the sc sub on reddit. So far the game is mostly 64bit allowing massive world support. I'll stop there but its anything but a scam. Most ppl infact complain about the rate of progress but considering how complexed it is what their doing I'd say progress is about whats expected.

And I wouldnt worry about taking orders in multicrew ships there will be plenty of solo roles such as bounty hunting for human and npc fugitives.

He started his career in 1986 on the BBC micro

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stryker%27s_Run

Cr is friends with people like Richard Garriott aka lord British. He's one of the top industry ppl, seriously there's little more I can say if ppl think he's a scammer to convince otherwise lol. He is beyond a doubt the right person to be making sc but that does not automatically mean it will not fold and burn as much as I love the game no amount of money talent or experience can guarantee anything. Occulus rift almost wasn't cause one of the guys making it got run over and died in a senseless hit and run. Occulus rift is solely responsible for the vr revolution now taking place if that had of been canned no vr. On the same token sc being as ambitious as it is if successful will make big games company's start to innovate and take risks again. If not if it fails it will take years for confidence to grow back. The point is if no risks are ever taken nothing new is ever made because all new ideas or concepts have high risk.

I do know who Chris Roberts is (and the whole price problem may be the work of someone else on the team anyway, not necessarily him, so he may not actually be relevant as this issue goes). Not sure who that Derek guy is though. I dont really read alot of news articles and such since most gaming news sites are all about the console AAA side of the industry these days. I mostly do indie games.

I did grow up in the 90s (and 80s) though Wing Commander wasnt a favorite of mine. I dont remember why. Other space games were though. Either that or I'm thinking of something else... been a bloody long time, after all, and my memory is absolutely horrid.

But anyway, no, where I got this from was by actually looking at their store, and also from a variety of conversations with other people, some of which are developers themselves (easier to get info from alot of them than from articles; they tend to be more concise).

But simply looking at their store was enough to get the ol' alarms blaring for me. It's like I said, even EA doesnt try to gouge their customers that much. Or even come close. Microtransactions are one thing; I would call these, in this game, MACROtransactions. They're THAT damn huge in terms of price that I need to make up a new word for them. That seriously screams "dont trust these guys" to me. I mean, really, what kind of developer does this?

There's only one way where this is really excusable in a general sense: If the ships can, at the same time (as in, right now), be earned... purely with in-game currency. That at least says "you dont *have* to actually pay with real money to get these specific ships, you just get them faster if you do". Though, even that falls apart if it takes like a bazillion years to earn something in-game, which can happen in games with microtransactions.

Anyway, that's just my own concerns about it. And it's certainly possible that in the end, these concerns will turn out to be unfounded (which is what I'd hope will happen). That's certainly happened before, and it's a good thing when it does, but for now I consider the game utterly unplayable. FPS section aside (really, I'm not a fan of that but I understand why others are) it's something I'd have to try for myself to get a real sense of, as for how it actually plays, but cant really do that. The last time I looked at the actual GAMEPLAY though it wasnt even close to as far along as it is now (most of what's there now didnt exist at that time).

Have a look again around Christmas you might be plesantly surprised. Basic currency is already in not sure when ships will be buyable in game for now only fps weapons and armour is. Its very early days for economy. The game its self is still basically early alpha. I'm a ptu tester myself, update 2.5 is due to roll out soon noteably adding NPCs and a new pu area grim hex an asteroid pirate base. Planetside landings and entry might be in 2.6 this year. I know the next few updates are adding more economy things like cargo system. You don't actually need to spend $100's just a base aurora pack is enough those that have spent $1000's are either stupid brave both or supporters lol. Some have wife's as well 8O if you know what eveonline players are like you'd understand.

Have a read through this discussion on reddit with ppl kicking around economy and trade ideas

https://m.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comm ... merchants/

I know what your saying about grinding and paywalls, i can tell you with certainty this game is not one of those mmo's and never will be or like i said it will die community is what keeps a game going. CR has basically staked his reputation on this, im pretty sure he will be taking every effort to keep pay to win in any shape or form out of the game. Linux version is also planned with vulkan support something many are looking forward too along with a dedicated server, contary to what some people may think CIG are open to mods even cheating just not on official server. If someone sets up their own dedicated server they can do what they want with it. I dunno about some of the lower ranking staff but the tops guys are good people, ive heard theres a high turnover rate at CIG i wonder why.

The real kicker will be to see what happens after the game goes retail, i know the sort of person CR is and i believe he wont stand for any funny business im pretty sure hes already been made offers by EA. Humorous fact, in players hangers there is a simulation mode they can enter, as you'd know arena commander. As players enter arena commander mode EA pops up on the screen this is no coincidence its a play on electronic arts but also meaning Electronic Access. The logo is even similar to the old EA logo. Im pretty sure CR hates pay to win and other bs like that.

There was a big letter CR wrote to backers, under from the chairman ive tried to find it but burried under millions of other posts lol. I'll post link if i do manage to find it, he talked alot about his feeling towards p2w and such.

This is not the exact link i was looking for but it does state CR's view on pay 2 win and other grinding mechanics

https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.c ... ent_173901

So these are the things i was talking about, if he goes back on them hes finished as a developer and life long career. I dont know any industry professional that would be willing to do that for the sake of some cash, imagine someone like John Romero doing this, as you'd know hes most famous for doom. Doom would become hated one of the most loved pc games of all time. So no it wont be pay to win or stupid grindy pay walls.

I'd also like to add i suspect hes slightly aspergers or autistic, watch CR speaking sometime in 10 for the chairman. Apparently hes a bit ego centric in real life but all of these guys are like that you should see Lord British talking lol.

Heres a couple of videos to watch on recent developments

The first is of the Starfarer

Some info on atmospheric flight

I happen to own a retaliator and banu merchant man myself, i love the tali for her engines so amazing to pilot. If you can find some footage with a fully crewed tali, people say its a crappy ship for offence but few have ever seen it crewed.

Cheers.
