Here's where I read it and other sites have latched onto the story as well

I hope this isnt true. I realize mobile/handheld gaming is huge, but home consoles should be a thing still. Not just a portable console that hooks up to the tv if you want. The 3DS by Nintendo is still alive and well- it seems silly and pointless to have two portables at the same time. Will Nintendo sacrifice memory and graphics (again) just to have another gimmick console? I really really hope not.

Don't get me wrong- I've been a huge Nintendo fan for a while, but I certainly think they need to stop with gimmicks and be on level with Sony and Microsoft. Third party companies would gladly make stuff for Nintendo more if that was the case.

And here I thought Nintendo were going to learn from their past mistakes, and actually make a system powerful enough to compete against Sony and Microsoft. Well, at least they didn't rehash the dated Gamecube architecture like they did for the Wii and Wii U. However, going for an ARM-based solution when x86 has the horsepower is kind of concerning. Then again, this could turn out well for them, since ARM chips have been getting a lot of development, and they do tend to sip power in comparison to equivalent x86s.

I think it make quite a lot of sense. A thing that must not be forgotten is that Nintendo is a japanese company thinking in priority of the japanese market, and that home consoles don't do well any more in Japan where mobile is kind; thus a handled that you can plug on television; a handled that can become a home console. It also give the advantage that they can now focus all their games on one console rather that dividing them between two. Even though it likely be less powerful that the XOne and the PS4, it will still be powerful enough for making a good console; we're in 2016 now, mobile devices have become powerful.

Mobile is powerful but certainly not enough compared to a regular PC or Sony and Microsoft consoles.

Nintendo has put out plenty of great games and consoles in the past, but honestly doesn't seem to do it well anymore. In my view- GameCube was their last great home console. Wii was a nice idea but wayyyy too much crap on it due to the motion sensor gimmick. Off the top of my head, I can't think of that many great Wii games (motion or non-motion), but I can certainly name great games for NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube. Then the Wii U did the whole tablet idea- which I found stupid, especially since many games don't even require it! So unless you buy a used Wii U, you are buying a near useless thing because you want the console itself.

Nintendo would rather try out gimmicks just to see what works apparently. It sometimes feels like they are thinking "oh we have extra cash, lets try to be creative.. perhaps gamers will buy this". But the sad reality is- third party support has been horrid from GameCube and on. These third party companies can easily pump out hit after hit on handheld, but somehow avoid the home console. That seems stupid and selfish on those companies part. But anyway- most gamers do buy Nintendo consoles for Mario, Zelda, Metroid and so on. But Nintendo loves to change even those around a lot and its really frustrated gamers a lot.

I'm hoping next console has better support, then it will survive longer. If not- I think it might be time for Nintendo to just do handheld stuff and possibly just retro consoles (like the whole NES mini of their previous great games).

The last home console Nintendo had that was truly competitive with its rivals was the SNES. I'm dead serious. Every other system they have released since has been crippled in some key way in comparison with its competitors, whether it be through a lack of storage capacity (N64, Gamecube), or through a lack of raw horsepower (Wii, Wii U).

Yeah, pretty much.

Honestly, seems to me that doing a portable thing and keeping a focus on that is probably the best idea right now. Mobile aside, Nintendo is pretty much the king of portable gaming; Sony has the Vita, but... that thing didnt exactly do well. But on the other hand, the 3DS and the ones before it have always done pretty well for themselves. Alot of people that have Nintendo stuff seem to have that, but not the Wii U.

I personally am fine with whatever they do, so long as it's not another damn Wii. I'll pass on the arm waving, thanks.
