Does anyone here like Visual Novels, and if so, do you have any recommendations [besides 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, since I don't want to play that one]?

STEINS;GATE is a highly critically acclaimed visual novel, I haven't played it though. There is also The Silver Case from SUDA51, it is remastered from 1999 and it will run well on a low end PC.

I should play more than I have. A notable one I have played was Katawa Shoujo, which is interesting for its cast of characters who have various disabilities, humanizing them out. It does have some adult parts.

Although I have found myself also being a fan of watching Visual Novels being played, my favourite channel of it being PressHeartToContinue, added bonus of good voices and funny commentary. One of the particularly awesome ones was Hatoful Boyfriend, the pigeon dating sim visual novel, which sounds super weird and that you might say that there is no way it is for you, but it is actually pretty awesome. I also liked Love at First Sight.

I wish I could play Clannad, but I know next to nothing about online/downloadable games, and I'm wary about those kinds of things anyway [viruses and such]. Does anyone have any advice?

^Watch out for the age ratings of the visual novels; some VNs tend to have major adult content that might make you wish you've never want to play it. I hate it when people refer to visual novels as "Erotic" and "Perverted", when a visual novel should mean EXACTLY as it says!

here, I go to this VN website in case you're interested: http://www.renpy.org

Avoid third party websites that may install spyware or malware on your system, others may state they are safe but never trust them as they could be after your personal data.

Clannad and many more visual novels from trusted developers are on Steam, it is considered the largest digital distributor for and the Steam client can be downloaded via the website.

You can even sort games by genre, keywords and categories.

I would recommend Danganronpa! :D I played both games and the spinoff, and I really enjoyed it. It's mostly horror/thriller and mystery, with investigations on crimes and a lot of plot twists. If it's your genre, I recommend it :) But mind the spoilers, the conclusive anime has finished airing recently so there will be a lot of them around; there is also an anime based on the first game, which I don't recommend because it's like 1/100 of the original :/
Now I'm waiting for V3 to come out in January.

Why don't you want to play 999? Just curious.

^I'm not a fan of scary things or mysteries very much, and 999 isn't my type of game [I like non-combative games like Harvest Moon or fantasy like Final Fantasy VII or 'family' games like Clannad.]

I can attest that Silver Case is very good...well, depending. It's a remaster of a 17 year old game and only now translated. A few puzzles and gameplay segments but it's very simple and you pretty much have an automatic solve button so the meat of the game is in the story and characters and unique visualization.

I hugely recommend Katawa Shoujo. It's technically a dating sim, but that's just the backdrop and game style. It's actually a heartwarming character study of various girls with pretty harsh disabilities. How they cope with them, and how despite it affecting their lives and making them different from yours or mine, they're normal people who aren't defined by their disability. Also a study into the main character's own disability, arguably worse than any of the others, and how his relationship with *insert girl of your choice* helps him learn to cope with his own.

There's some sexual content, which I wasn't really interested in. I have various fetishes, but on the act itself verge on asexuality. But, said sexual content is framed as loving, tender moments. The emotional interplay is fun to read, you can skip past the graphic parts if you're like me and bored by it.

Don't believe the gender tag. I was born intersex and identify as queer, girl-leaning. So while I can sometimes present as an effeminate guy, that's less than half the time and if anything I'd prefer it say "female" of the two choices offered. I can't change it though, it's bugged.
