My dad really likes the Grand Theft Auto games, he will play through the entire plot and then spend many hours just going on rampages of destruction throughout the virtual world. But hes been getting tired of playing the same small series of games over and over again.

He's not a fan of the Fallout or Elder Scrolls games, because he doesn't like customizing characters. He doesn't like Call Of Duty series because it's too linear, he likes having more options for his character to explore in an open world.

What would you recommend? I was thinking of getting him Assassin's Creed Origins because I remember loving to explore and fight in the first game in the same way my dad does in GTA, but I stopped following the AC games because the plot got way too complicated. Is the new game what I want? Are there any other suggestions?

My dad plays video games on an Xbox One.

Sounds like he might like Breath of the Wild, but that would be difficult to play on an Xbone...

If he likes GTA he might like Mafia 3. It's the same kind of story where you can drive around and kill whoever you want. Also the character is the same throughout no customization just better guns to buy.

I really liked it but a lot of people did not. The missions are kind of repetitive and the controls and AI are not quite as good as GTA. But the story is like watching the Sopranos or a mob movie easily the best part. It gets very mature. You are a black man in the South in the 1960's and lots of racial slurs and the general cultural vibe of the time are there. Like at points you kill KKK members and things like that.

Now you should be able to buy it cheap because it came out last year espeicly if your dad is ok with a download of the game to system and not a physical disk. I don't know lots of gamers want the disc.

I have not played Watch Dogs 2, but from what I've seen and heard of it it is both similar to GTA and of good quality.

There are also the Far Cry series of games, which are good. At least the ones I've played, 3 and 4. They are first person shooters though.

I might not have a huge amount to pull from, but maybe Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain could be a good choice, I don't think it has too hard of customisation than GTA, and gives quite a bit of freedom.

Maybe a departure if he just enjoys guns play, but I think that Shadow of Mordor or Shadow of War can be kind of fun of feeling like you are going on a rampage after doing some story and harassing some orcs.

Or if he is not indifferent to Batman, there Batman: Arkham City, open world environments which are worth exploring.

There is the significantly-goofier Saints Row series as a foil to GTA seies, but there hasn’t been a new game in a while (Agents of Mayhem doesn’t count).

In terms of blowing up random crap there is the Just Cause series, that could be a good thing to get him.

You know, he did play all the way through one of those Arkham games. But I don't think it was quite of an open enough environment for him to explore/cause mayhem for him to keep playing. Maybe he stopped because the thing broke or something... I'll ask him.

And thank you everyone for all the wonderful suggestions so far!
