The only online game I have played as of late is Rocket League.

I only seen it played a few times but that was a cool concept for a game... seemed a bit clunky though.

I used to play alot of MMOs, until WoW came along and corrupted/ruined the genre. Now I havent touched them in ages, and probably wont do so until they stop trying to be freaking WoW.

I play Overwatch sometimes, but only every so often really.

Uhhh... other than that, there really just isnt much. I tend not to find most multiplayer games to be very interesting. Particularly since damn near all of them (that arent MMOs) are just FPS games. And I greatly dislike the majority of that genre.

Well, no, I do like mobas, but I just dont play them much. Their communities are WAY too freaking toxic.

It's possible though that I might play at least a few more multiplayer games online if it wasnt for the fact that I can get really bad social anxiety from doing so. That really hinders things.

Offline multiplayer though is a bit different. Very into fighting games. But I dont touch online modes with those.... too much waiting, too many opponents that just do the same damn things over and over.

Do you play Rocket League on PC? I play it often but I haven't played ranked yet. I bought five keys and received X-Devil MK II in my first crate, I haven't played the game with any other car since.

Misery, I haven't tried World of Warcraft but I have played a few MMO games in the past. I haven't played many because I am reserved when it comes to the social aspect and I find it hard to make friends when everyone else is grinding or playing the game.

I have considered Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn but I think a subscription to any game would be a serious commitment, maybe that's good though as I have a huge backlog of games.

Man, this section of the forum barely has any activity, huh?

The reason I was bringing this topic up is because lately, I feel like playing games has become less interesting to me, partially due to the fact that I have no one to play games with. Unfortunately, I had a pretty negative experience with middle and high school partially due to my Asperger's and my desire to not piss off my parents' Fundamental Baptist beliefs. I only had one friend I hung out with after high school, and I stopped hanging around him due to him being an as*hole about my not getting the Xbox One as opposed to building a PC. If it wasn't him, I always had an older brother to play games with. Nowadays, though, said older brother is married and I find myself playing games alone. The problem I face is that I don't know where to meet other people to play games with.

I am usually more comfortable with playing games locally, kind of like you, Misery, but unfortunately, buying another TV, another system, and another copy of a game, not to mention the controllers, is necessary if you have something that the other person doesn't these days if you want anything close to playing the same room, if that option is even offered at all. So trying to find others online to find an actual friend to play games and do other things with is a problem in and of itself.

The worst part about it, however, is that I have less time than I did back in high school to play and enjoy the games. So if I am going to buy a game, I want to be sure that I actually am going to pick it up and play it again. Some games, like Rocket League, I can do that with. Others, like Smash 4, I am hesitant to get because I have no friends, and not to mention, I don't own a Wii U, and do not like the thought of getting the system for one game. (especially with cemu possibly becoming a replacement in the future for the system, but anyways)

I guess what I am trying to say with all of this is that I wish I had more people to play games that are more or less meant for multiplayer with. Yeah, playing against the AI in Tekken can be fun if you're unlocking things, but once everything is unlocked, you just put it on the shelf and have that save ready for the random occasion you actually get to play against other people in the same room so you don't have to deal with the lag issues that I heard years ago were common with fighting games.

Does anyone else have this issue with playing games nowadays who is used to playing games with other people? If you solved it, how did you meet other people, and what did you enjoy the most about the experience?

Aye, you're correct, this place is very slow, as forums go. Alot of the more active members left by now, particularly after... incidents. I'm relatively certain I'm one of the very few remaining that actually checks this section of the site frequently... though these days alot of topics dont interest me, so I dont say as much as I used to.

I understand alot of what you're saying here though.

I'm rather in the same boat for this stuff... I have nobody to play any of these sorts of things with, aside from fighting games, but... well, I'll get to that in a minute. Friends of mine are all into gaming, but our interests couldnt be more different. They tend to play alot of AAA games or story-focused RPGs or.... basically things that put me to sleep. I tend to play games that dont bother with story or cutscenes, things like bullet-hell shmups, roguelikes, strategy games, or arcade-style games... all of these tend to be exceedingly difficult and nobody I know will try them.

But not just that... I stopped giving a flying fart about AAA games years ago, after getting more and more disillusioned with them. It's all about graphics and games trying to be movies these days, and I was tiring of it. Graphics lost the ability to impress me, and when that happened, I started realizing alot of those games were.... shallow. Easy. Boring. So I moved on to mostly playing indie games; the advantage of those is that indie devs can make ANYTHING; they dont have to stick to major trends because they dont have some giant publisher telling them that they have to. I went from only rarely buying a new game (due to the AAA side only rarely putting out anything I care about) to buying new things waaaayyyyyy too frequently. And there's SO many interesting games out there that I've grown to love, of all genres. I've even had a chance to take part in development myself now, and see for myself the sort of freedom offered to developers there.

But friends of mine? Aside from very, very specific games, like Binding of Isaac or Enter the Gungeon, I could mention damn near any game I'm into, and they have no bloody clue what I'm talking about. And they dont care. Same, for the most part, on forums like this... it's very, very rare that I even bother mentioning stuff I'm into, because I already know that nobody will give a crap. Or have a clue what I'm talking about. This is mostly PC gaming for me, by the way; none of that "master race" crap, but mostly just because the selection is so gigantic and also it has all the arcade roms (I love old arcade games). But yeah, all of this means that any game that COULD be played in multiplayer or in any way shared with friends just... well, that's not happening for me. It's either singleplayer, online with randoms, or nothing. Most of the time, singleplayer it is.

And that's pretty frustrating. Yeah, I have social issues, but... that doesnt mean that I dont want to do these sometimes.

However, it's more than that. Even when I DO play multiplayer games, things often get stupid. Fighting games for instance are the most frequent type I play. Guilty Gear, Blazblue, stuff like that. But... I have trouble getting people to play against me in those. I'm good at those. Very... very... good. I'm not good at memorizing combos but my sheer speed (reaction speed and mental processing speed) is extremely high and makes up for that entirely, so even against very high level players, I'm probably winning. Which sounds braggy as all hell, yes, but it's the truth. This means that I cant get people to play these with me for very long because after just a couple of matches, they assume they cannot win, and give up. Only ONE specific friend of mine never gives up no matter what, but all the others... yeah, there's not even any point. And I cant find any TEAM games to play with them where that wouldnt happen for obvious reasons, but yeah, there's just none there. So even fighting games these days boil down to mostly Blazblue with that one friend (who is also very good at it). Games seem to have trained players these days to expect victory to be handed to them, and when it isnt, they give up.

And of course the AI in fighting games is... weak. Too weak. I dont even bother with singleplayer modes in those anymore, it's not going to do much but waste time. Not that it's anyone's fault, genuinely good AI is damn near impossible to make still, but... yeah, that doesnt help.

I have tried playing online at times but I just run into that very same issue. People show up, try the same tired tactics over and over because they saw some pro do it, and when it doesnt work, they quit. And then I'm back to the lobby for another 2000 years. And then my patience shatters. I can however say that the lag issues you speak of are pretty much gone these days.... IF you personally have a connection capable of doing it. When I have played online, lag was USUALLY nonexistent. Every now and then it'd still happen of course, but it aint like it used to be where it'd happen all the time.

The only time when all of this is different is when I'm at an anime convention; it's easy to find opponents there. Well, sort of... some people tend to avoid me for certain reasons not related to the games (or others just get really weird at me for those same reasons), so that interferes. But yeah, that's the ONLY time I find it easy to play these.

Bah.

Also, yeah, buying a whole console for ONE game usually isnt a very good move. I've done it before, but I'm an impulse buyer without much in the way of limits. That, and it was for extremely specific games I knew I'd be getting a really silly amount of hours out of (LittleBigPlanet, Mario Maker, for instance, those sold those consoles to me immediately). But I always tell people I know NOT to do that. Unless they want a game THAT bad and know they'll be playing it a huge amount.

But yeah, I also agree with you on another thing: If I am buying a game, I want it to be something with replay value. Not something that I play through once and never touch again. Which I suppose is why I play alot of roguelikes and games with procedural generation, those are designed to have extreme replay value, so they serve that purpose well. Same with the bullet-hell games. Any time I play something, go through it ONCE, and feel like I'm done with it, I always feel that I didnt really get my money's worth. ....even if I only spent $5 on it.

Feh. I do wish I had people to play these in. Or even just talk about them with, but yeah, as I said, nobody gives a fart, so these days I just dont bother trying in most cases. Except occaisionally with certain people I know on Steam.

I wish I could offer some advice here, but... yeah, dont really have any. It gets harder and harder to meet up for local play in general, even when people DO share interests in games.

WoW (had a good run earlier tonight with a great group of people, ie the guild I'm with)
League of Legends

Also a few Steam games me and my best mate have, such as Beat Hazard and Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is a great game, one of the best stealth games from Ubisoft. I own Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege on Steam and it is a great game for the multiplayer and co-op modes.

I've played World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, and others. I tend not to stick to them too long, though, but I feel like MMORPGs are good for meeting other gamers online. You tend to see the same players often if you're in the same guild. Other games you're unlikely to ever see a group again.

I've also played Starbound and Terraria with friends, although I'm not sure those are the type of online games OP is talking about.

Which MMORPG involved the most roleplaying? I always think of roleplaying as a form of acting but it must be a huge commitment for a guild to be created with a particular roleplay in mind.

Final Fantasy XIV involved more story elements in my opinion, since the franchise has always been story-focused. Guilds don't necessarily roleplay and might just do battle content.

I have looked into Final Fantasy XIV before but the player count on steam is low in comparison to World of Warcraft, I have always wondered why there aren't more people playing Final Fantasy XIV. Is World of Warcraft more focused on PvP and raiding? Does WoW require you to play it constantly to be good at the PvP? I found that with League of Legends but I know Blizzard take a more casual approach to competitive PvP.

Every MMO is low compared to World of Warcraft. It's yet another reason why I always say it "corrupted" the genre. It's killed off quite a few good ones.

Also something to keep in mind is that something like Final Fantasy XIV and WoW arent actually comparable with League of Legends. ENTIRELY different genre, they have nothing whatsoever to do with each other. FF XIV and WoW are MMOs, huge games about world exploration and co-operative monster clobbering. League of Legends is a "moba", and a PURELY competitive game. It's closer to being a fighting game than something like an MMO. For Blizzard, the game of theirs that competes with League is Heroes of the Storm, which is their own "moba" game.

League of Legends is the main one I play, only have been playing for a bit over a year I think...and I didn't really play online games before so its really the first one I've gotten into. But yeah my brother started playing it and suggested I give it a try and now we play together quite a bit.

I also have been playing a game called Path of Exile which is pretty fun and you can pretty much design whatever sort of character you want, right now I am playing a witch with necromancy abilities, I kind of wish it was a console game though...

I also have some special edition Civilization V with various extensions or whatever, it has an online mode but I haven't played that...and it's a fun game when you're bored or don't have Internet(unless one is trying to play the online mode I imagine). But the games take so long to complete and so it can get a little draining and boring after a while.

LoL certainly is not a casual game that is for sure...certainly not the sort of game to reduce stress or relax if you're stressed. Sometimes I avoid playing even when I kind of want to if I am not in the right kind of mood for the intensity of it.
