I don't generally like using gamepads, but when I do I use my Xbox One Elite controller. It has wireless, but I prefer to use it wired to minimise latency. I really only use it for third person games or driving games, where an analog stick is useful.
For anything that uses four or eight way movement I prefer to use my keyboard as it has reduced latency and there's less chance of inadvertent input. If I do use a Dpad though the Xbox One Elite has the best I've used, though I imagine there's better options such as a high end arcade stick.
As for other controllers, I use Vive wands for VR gaming and a Logitech X56 HOTAS for flight games. I'm not a fan of the latter, but it's the best I've found without paying a ton more, with sufficient buttons for the games I play. Mostly my issues are with the overly large stick which makes it difficult to reach some of the controls.
