Are there games in the App Store that people don’t have to spend real money? I guess everything cost money now like for power ups.

Yes there are, but the games are designed to be addictive, so you spend money on various things. These things are usually available for free but it takes a lot of game time to get.

I've never paid for any phone games.

Some games are worse than others in terms of manipulating players to spend money. Some are built around it, others aren't. Most games are somewhere in between. It's hard to know what to recommend without knowing your gaming preferences.
