Who still thinks the classic video games are the best?

You know, Super Mario, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, etc.

This is off topic but I had to share this. It's shows the misunderstandings that occur when video game characters mix with different video games.

I think that the modern games have gotten too complicated. I hate to play a half hour tutorial before I get to actually play the game and be interrupted by cutscenes every ten minutes like in Metal gear solid 2. Back in the days, all you did was start the game and play and nothing else was needed. So why did the game developers start putting stories in games when everyone was happy with the pick-and-play games? I have no idea.

I myself am a sucker for classic gaming. :D I can't stand some of the newer games, they've focused way too much on graphics and not on actual gameplay. I just go out shoot things, flight, and kill people, not have to adjust cameras, and get lost on the levels.

Funny this thread came up cause i just found this just now. You can play actual NES games online, no downloads.

I find fewer and fewer games each year that I want to play. I remember a time when at least 1 game each month came out that I was so anxious to play, and now there are maybe 2 or 3 games I HAVE to play each year. Super Paper Mario and Metroid Prime 3 are the only 2 must play games for me this year (assuming MP3 comes out) and Super Mario Galaxy if it's released.

I agree with most of you, new video games suck nowadays. That's why I like classic video games better.

I like both old and new-style video games - I'm currently having great fun playing the new Super Mario Brothers game on my DS, and also playing Resident Evil 4 on my Gamecube.

And I love Tetris, as well. Tetris = teh pwnage, d00d.

* Pipe Dream
* Super Mario Bros. (of course)
* Tetris

Tant R, Sonic 2, Bonanza Bros., and Space Harrier[even though it's lame.] are good.

Those are all Sega games too! :)

I love modern games, and I don't like games that are overly simple (ie Pacman, arcade games of that era).

My own big complaint is I love 2D gameplay (and graphics!) and we don't see enough of either. Once consoles started being able to do 3D, a lot of series were randomly shoe-horned into 3D for no reason. Take Mario as an example. A lot of people like the two 3D Mario games. I don't, but regardless, they really have little to to with the Super Mario Bros./World gameplay.

I'd LOVE to see (for example) the complete power of a Playstation 3 put towards a sequel to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. 100's of MB of gorgeous art on screen all the time...

The other thing I'd like is games to be made a bit easier or more playable. I think in general things have improved, but I *HATE* when I invest a bunch of time (and money!) in a game and then get STUCK somewhere that I think isn't fair, or when the difficulty takes a sudden spike or something like that.

i agree with the criticism of newer games. a lot of them are an attempt to be jack-of-all-trades but excel at nothing. still, there are new games that are great: the metal gear solid series, for example, really improved in terms of game quality from their msx predecessors. they arent made to compete with pure gameplay giants like most arcade games, though. metal gear solid 3, okami, final fantasy xii, ocarina of time, wind waker and twilight princess, the resident evil series... those arent bad games.

still, i love the old school of focussing on a certain aspect of gameplay to keep the games fun. most good arcade games are great at that (by necessity, given the environment in which they are planned to be played). quakeworld, the old zeldas, the old metroids, the different jump-and-run classics... they certainly didnt lose their flavor over time.

All a game should need is a D-Pad, Jump Button, Fire/Attack/Whatever Button and the pause button for those times when the call of nature is too great.

Which is why I love the old Sonic games. You didn't need the attack button!
