^^
I am going to get a big new TV right away and think I will get a game system too. I have a ps1 and ps2, so I like sony so far, but the 360 is a little cheaper and has more games out right now. Which is better for graphics etc, and has better games/games coming out. I like shooters, grand theft auto, survival horror/adventure, guitar hero... those types of games. Help me out here.

The 360 is the better system, overall.
It has more games, it has better exclusive titles, it has a vastly superior online service, and games play better on it(in terms of framerate, glitches, etc).

The PS3 has a bluray player and better graphics, but that's about it. If you want multimedia it may be the better choice, but if you want a gaming machine stick to the 360.

I'd recommend the Elite, though. The Pro models still burn up pretty fast.

I'm on the fence on this one too. I like my PS2 and liked my PS1 and wouldn't mind getting a PS3, but the Xbox 360 is cheaper and has some exclusive games I'm interested in trying out. Big problem with PS3 is price. Big problem with Xbox 360 is burn up. Maybe we'll get both eventually...

I'll have to remember that Elite tip.

Burn up? What do you mean?

"Burn up" means the console has a hardware failure (often due to overheating), and needs to be repaired. It's a big problem for 360s, but apparently moreso for earlier models.

I'd still get a 360 over a PS3 though, unless you want to spend more time watching blu-ray movies than playing games.

I have never been much of a gamer. So if I ever get a console, I better be able to modify it :)
When I used to have a XBox, me and my brother modified it to be able to run our old PS1 games, we just interfaced the PS1 with the XBox, and changed the coding for the XBox OS to be able to detect the PS1 and utilize it. So all we had to do is scroll down to the PS1 option in the menu and it will load the disc that we had in the PS1 at the time! We ended up selling it a year later :'(

The best thing to do is find lists of all the games for each system, go through them, and decide which games you'd rather play. Then take backwards compatibility into account and look up all the games for XBox, PS1, and PS2 as well in case you ever find some old games you want to play. Decide which system's library looks more appealing to you and go for that one.

And if all the games you want to play are non-exclusive to either system, go for the PS3. The Xbox 360 seems to have this thing called the "Red Light of Death" which keeps happening to everyone I know who's bought a 360.

Yeah, worrying about burn ups and Red Light of Death or Blue Screen of Death and all the inconvenience that would bring to get the things fixed possibly over and over again and having to deal with customer service, just makes me want to say no to the Xbox 360. It scares me.

The 'burning up' is indeed the 'three red rings of death'.
Like NewRotIck said, it is caused by a hardware failure inherent to a good deal of the early systems, but it happens to enough of the newer ones to make it worth considering too.

For some reason the black, more expensive 'elite' models seem to never get this. I've heard a few tales about different chipsets and such, but I honestly don't know why. It also has a hell of a lot more memory and comes with the HDMI cables that usually run a good buck anyway.

I have all the systems and I play my 360 a lot more than anything else. But if you're just looking for a good multimedia/bluray player you may as well buy the PS3 and add a solid game machine into the mix since it costs about the same/less than most straight bluray players on their own.

I have a PS3 and Wii which is the best combination in my opinion.

I only own a PS3, but mostly use it to play classic PS2 games at the moment (until the new God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, and Final Fantasy come out next year.) I've tried out the 360 and found that none of the titles really impressed me - it's just too generic of a gaming system. I think I'd sooner buy a Wii to go with my PS3 as well. Where it lacks in graphics, it really makes up for in fun titles.
