Does anyone regard certain games as almost sacred?

I have this thing for beautiful things... and most video games are beautiful. I start to feel like they're this holy relic, like Kingdom Hearts after playing it, as it imparted such wholesomeness.

The downside, though, is that when I had a breakdown I seemed to have started seeing everything in a fearful perspective, and that meant that sacredness was almost too precious to be touched, lest I don't appreciate it as much as before.

...yes, go figure.

Planescape: Torment and Xenogears are both pretty sacred to me.

If it wasn't completely weird I would worship my Pokemon on Pokemon Crystal.

I'm kinda starting to feel that way about Lord of the Rings Online. When i started i hadn't played any MMO for months and i was immediately hooked, best of all it's free! I didn't pay a cent for hours of fun every day. That's what i consider pretty sacred.

Silent Hill 2 has always been my favourite. I love what the game does and how different a second playthrough was (not in terms of gameplay, but the experience).

Deadly Premonition maybe. Somehow all of the games faults help create something very unique, and I honestly wouldn't change a thing.

Yeah, I see a lot of that.

The following are games that are either VERY close to my heart or ones that I acknowledge as gaming perfection and will argue over them.

The Silent Hill Trilogy, without a doubt, totally brilliant atmosphere, music and rusted beauty beneath steel grating. Xenogears is really up there, but I acknowledge a lot of faults it has but it combines so much of what I love, even if the translation is a bit wonky and disc 2 aside its a very beautiful game. To this day Ramsus, in my eyes, is one of the most tragic, sad rpg characters ever..and one of my few video game crushes . I'm so mad that he was going to be included as a playable character but was axed at the last minute! Planescape Torment is VERY dear to me too, oh my god. Pretty much any of the origin games, like Wing Commander, Privateer, STRIKE COMMANDER. Freespace 1 & 2, Descent..Same applies for Micropose (Xcom, MoO, and MoM) and Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3. LOVE Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri too. I love strategy games, if you can't tell. Warcraft 3 and its expansion STILL blow me away just because of the campaigns. The scourge theme music is forever engrained in my skull along with the AWESOME drums of the horde. OH AND SHINING FORCE 2!! !! ! Do I even need to mention Starcraft? Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and Final Fantasy 6 make up a holy trifecta of rpg goodness that is totally unrivaled for me.

The most recent additions to the "sacred" list would probably have to be Demon Souls and its sequel, Dark Souls. Challenging, beautiful and chillingly atmospheric, truly satisfying combat..and did I mention both games were frickin amazing? Screw the other-stated difficulty, yeah it got out of hand a few times (f**k you Stormshrine) but it was one of the only games I've played recently that's really satisfied me. I haven't beat Dark Souls yet but its just like its older brother so its get a place too. Oh and Resident Evil 4. One of the few "perfect" video games I've ever played, beats the socks out of its sequel. Oh and all the pokemon games are sacred to me, yes I love them all. Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond, Platinum, Black and White. I think I have a problem 8O

I could probably think of more games but its late. Basically the early 90s to around the mid to late 90s are like a big golden age of gaming to me.

Oh and the original Doom. I played the shareware version to death and was so hyped to get the full game! Them Bones by Alice in Chains is one of my favorite songs just because it sounds like one of the themes from Doom II. Dark Forces and Hexen are probably my favorite Doom Clones, Dark Forces is my favorite Star Wars game along with the Tie and X-wing sims (RE-RELEASE THESE GOG!! !!). Oh and before I forget: Snatcher. Hideo Kojima's best game ever.

I love Dark Souls and I've played it for hours and hours, but somehow most of the second half of the game doesn't work for me. It's almost like it's two games. I don't mind the difficulty at all, it makes the game in a lot of ways, but the second half of the game isn't difficult, but rather gimmicky and just annoying. Invisible platforms, gimmick bossfights, completely dark areas that force you to adopt a certain playstyle, and plenty of other stuff that annoys me. The areas aren't as well polished as the rest of the game. I still love the last area and the final bossfight though. It would be up there with Silent Hill and Deadly Premonition.

I loved Duke Nukem as a kid btw. I was never any good at the game itself, but building your own levels for it was great fun.

I don't know if I'd use the word sacred or anything like that but yeah, there are certain things that when I first saw them or played them I thought they were pretty amazing. I used to try and re-experience them every now and then but I'm wary that I may develop a disinterest in it, whether I get bored of it or whether I see it in a completely different light and wonder how on earth it was I enjoyed it so much in the first place (i.e. 'this is s**t what was I thinking?').

How did you feel about all the KH sequels out of curiosity?

The_Perfect_Storm, to be honest I haven't played them yet, as stupid as that may be, due to that breakdown. It may be that I thought KH1 was just perfect, and as such nothing could top it, but I was probably just depressed...

Personally I consider Shadow of The Colossus to be sacred. The sheer beauty of the landscape combined with the soundtrack made it a game of legends. There were only about 14 opponents in the entire game but each was giant and almost like a puzzle in the way you had to defeat it.

As Shau mentioned: Planescape: Torment.

If I am ever responsible for children and they live to be teenagers, I will do my level best to see that they play through the game once. There are a bunch of games I got really into, but this one game is the only game I know which tells a story that I believe humans *have* to experience.
