I have played Ultima since it first came out with Ultima I The First Age of Darkness in 1980.
I absolutely LOVED Ultima IX Ascension. All these games were not online. I also played Ultima Online Mondain’s Legacy and hated it. The main reasons for my hating it were because Electronic Arts is constantly screwing with the game. I get to a skill and next month the skill is nerfed. They change the rules and parameters and I’m back to square one where the skill is useless to me. Not to mention the fact that compared to Ultima IX of 1999 the graphics of present day Ultima Online are horrendous. I even tried World of Warcraft for a little bit but it seems too cartoonish. Furthermore I don’t know how I’m going to find Blizzard Entertainment to be further down the road. For all I know they’re going to be screwing too much with the parameters of the game also. I thought about Tabula Rasa but I cant get that old world charm of Ultima out of my head. I even tried sending an e-mail to where Richard Garriott works, no reply. Can someone, please, recommend me a game like Ultima IX again.

Haven't played IX, but I don't know too many games like Ultima...there's a few games that have the same (or at least similar) degree of freedom and consequence, like Fallout, STALKER, etc...Planescape is supposed to be really good, but I haven't gotten to play it yet.

Don't play too many MMOs, but there's a fan-made game using the 256 color Ultima IV graphics called EUO (Egg's Ultima Online), it's got a lot of that oldschool Ultima flavor. But if you think UO's graphics are outdated, you definitely wouldn't like EUO.

The Underworld games are a pleasant diversion, though not quite the same as the main series...much more like a dungeon hack version of Rogue, without the randomness.

All you have to do is accidentally have your download manager set to do multiple downloads for a split second and you're banned for a few hours.

I should know, I've done it a few times :x
