Mine does. Computer games have always been a great obsession of mine. I not only play games, but think about how they're designed, and I frequently come up with game ideas of my own.

Another thing is that I've become very attached to single-player first-person shooters. I prefer this genre for a number of reasons, one of them being the lack of in-game "socialization." I find it very difficult to get into games where I'm expected to interact with other people, real or otherwise. Some of my social anxiety from the real world permeates into my gaming. I can "help" NPC's kill enemies, but I don't like being responsible for them, or having complex conversations with them where saying the wrong thing will piss them off. That's why I'm not comfortable playing RPG's or RTS's... though I understand why a lot of folks are into them.

Does your AS influence the way you play? If so, how?

I like games where you have to socialize because I get the chance to do things I wouldn't do in Real Life...which is a major plus for any videogame feature, I'd have to say. That's probably why I find Windows Solitaire so boring.

Except in Animal Crossing...socializing is rather pointless, so I generally don't talk to anyone unless they approach me.

I also love games where you have to socialize. What I don't like is when you accidently say the wrong thing and it effects the characters view on you negatively and you can't change it. Though, in games like that usually I create a seperate file where I'm a jerk to everyone just for fun. Mass Effect is a fun game for this kind of interaction. Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX also are great like that.

Nothing like 2 humans, and 10 bots in first person - I hate it when I get my player killed by a human opponent, so I just comment on his killing and laugh, as it is after all for fun or I would get very agitated. I play better when I am losing, I find ways of coming back and win the game 8)

To keep winning you must lose, I force myself to notice what differences there are and I can improve.

I rather enjoy online games such as MMOs, because socializing is so much easier through a computer than in real life, I don't have to worry about all those social cues that I have to worry about in real life.

I'm not really sure if AS causes this, but who knows... But I tend to be over-emotional when it comes to video-game characters. I can't tell you how many times I have restarted the same section of a level over and over again to make sure that one NPC doesn't die.

I play WoW but actually really struggle with the social interaction. The things that I enjoy are the strategies: working out the best way to hit above my weight, get round quest objectives that are tough, and so on. I like the puzzle of it. I really struggle with playing with other people though, except for two other players whom I know irl. All that social anxiety comes back, even though it's online. Kinda sucks.

Yeah mine does influence mine, I too hate when you are expected to look after someone in the game, but often you have no choice. I also often create 2 games where I am all good then I am all bad, like in KOTOR 2 I had one called Bradleigh where I was all good then one called Ashleigh where I was an evil sith. I also often become obsesed with the story, I like to find out all I can.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one. But it's interesting that for some Aspies it's a kind of freedom.

Yeah, I've done that too. I remember when I was in the City 17 area in Half-Life 2, I kept trying to prevent my squad from getting killed, and then the Striders showed up and kept killing everybody and I felt somewhat "devastated" for not being able to save them. After a while, though, I gave up on trying to keep them alive.

I used to be like that ... I play GTA and I save after every mission as I don't like the thought of killing my player and losing everything weapons, armour, etc

In Half-Life 2 I just did what I could to save everyone I could. If they got killed, they should have followed me or Barney.

I like to get perfect scores - but trying to do so means I re-start over and over, until I give up and get the perfect score 8O 8O 8O Then the computer crashes

Well, I really like MMO's and FPS's, for different reasons. MMO's had been a social outlet for me, as pseudo as it is. I play Star Wars Galaxies (SWG), mostly, though I'm also playing Age of Conan.

Just recently SWG added voice-chat. Egads! I'm so bummed out. One of the reasons I liked playing the game is because it was type-chat only, unless ya hopped onto Ventrillo or something. Now my guildies are thinking I'm a guy and not a woman because I won't go on chat. So now I "have to". /sigh I'm dreading it because then my Aspie will come out of the closet. Also, I've been hearing the voices of the guildies and they are not what I imagined. Kinda freakin' me out. Typing is so different than voice!

:(

Being a Aspie affects my gamingin many ways.

For example i find it a lot easier to make friends on onlien games like EVE online and when i play online on my playstation 3.
For example the number of real world friends is about 12 overall and on EVE it's about 30 and on playstation online about 21 which shows that chatting online with people is easier for me.

If any of you guys play EVE my EVE charactr nae IS Koppel cant remember the last name lol

Also if any aspies have a steam account add me mine is graeme_was_here and i alwys play CSS, TF2, and HL2DM

I enjoyed the socializing in MMOs but not the grind, hence why I dont play. But a good online FPS can be fun. Team Fortress 2 is a game that strongly motivates cooperation. It is fun single handedly killing an entire enemy team, but even more so when you coordinate a complex and well timed strategy to defeat your enemies own well positioned defences.

I also suspect aspergers is why I am such a completist. Always want that 100%

I picked up a sentry turret with the gravity gun and gunned them all down =D

Have you played Episode 2 yet? If not, you're going to hate the Strider battle at the end...the NPCs were pissing me off to no end :x I might be paraphrasing a little, but one guy even said "Sit back and let Gordon do all the hard work" :x :x :x I wanted to shoot that guy right in the face.

This might be too late, but I always tell people I don't have a mic.

Sometimes it's a lie ¬_¬

Don't see why it's important for them to know whether you are female or not...every time I see a girl enter a heavily male dominated Internet area, all the guys are like "OMG GIRL ON INTERNET, BACK OFF, I SAW HER FIRST" You'd be better off just avoiding that situation, IMO.

Only problem is that more of them keep showing up and "joining" your team, even when the Striders are slaughtering them by the dozen. I pretty much gave up on saving them when I noticed that. Sometimes their conversations can be quite funny, though...

-"I can't even remember the last time I took a shower!"
-"First time for everything."

Yeah, I hated that battle. I didn't pay too much attention to what the NPC's were saying... I was too busy driving back and forth like a maniac, trying to hold off the Strider onslaught... :P

I love the Half-Life games, but one of the things I didn't like about Half-Life 2 and the episodes is that you don't get to fight/explore on your own as much as in the first game. It's like you're always having your hand held through it, by Alyx, Barney, the Resistance, or even the Antlions.

I would think that would certainly be a link, particular with AS types that have a really hard time and I mean a really hard time getting girl friend / boy friends and just friends. It's a good distraction from the world that often can dark and depressing for a lot of AS people. Thats not to say that eveyone that play and wants to make computer games is weirdo nerd that hides in their mother's basement, I'm just saying that it can be such a relaxing way to calm oneself down. It was great for me when I was a young kid, although I had a far better time at gaining friends than most with my condition.
