Heh heh heh. I have resisted this topic for as long as I can, but can restrain myself no longer. I love retro gaming, and have a large collection of vintage gaming consoles/computers and emulators. What is your favourite platform from days gone by?

[skip this bit if you are allergic to this kind of thing....] I am a Commodore 64 fan, and will make no apology for it - the games were cheap and cheerful, and included such classics as The Last Ninja, Wizball, Rick Dangerous and Jeff Minter's bizarre creations like Attack of the Mutant Camels or Sheep in Space, and loads of great arcade ports like Power Drift, Rainbow Islands, Wonderboy, etc etc. The graphics were 16 colour and featured multi coloured sprites and backgrounds, and the unique, bendable, three-channel sound generated by the SID chip was arguably ahead of its time and beat the pants off anything pre-WAV IMHO. I have loads of SID music as I might have mentioned elsewhere... [/partisan wibbling over.... ]

I also like the Sega Master System, the original Atari games system (2600, whatever) and the Amiga, (although I have a few problems with mine I haven't got round to sorting out yet - but I first encountered the joys of SimCity on an Amiga so had to have one to tinker with :P ) do any of you have a retro platform you can't forget - or do you disdain anything pre-Playstation?

Heh. The retro gamers here might enjoy this, if you haven't already seen it ;)

I love retro gaming!

I have a ton of emulators installed on my machine.I especiallly love my MAME emulators. I could play teeange ninja turtles, x men, and the simpsons. Alot of video games today are lot more complex. Whatever happened to just completing boards, and getting a high record number of points?

I will always have a place in my heart for retro gaming.

Being old enough to remember all the retro games first time around, I've got to say that I think they're mostly best off belonging in the memory only.... I got an emulator a few years ago and eagerly loaded up "Jet Set Willy" and "Underworlde" (ah, Spectrum memories..... :) there was just something about that rubber keyboard), and frankly couldn't believe how bad they were compared to what I so fondly remembered.......

I also got very cross a while back when I found out that there was actually a bug in "Jet Set" that made it impossible to complete.... I used to spend hours trying to get that last *&^%£^$! piece of glass, and it turns out years later that it was physically impossible to do so.....

Honestly there are days when I miss my old Intellivision gaming system. Graphics were basic and so were the games and just feeling nostalgic. *laughs*

Sega Genesis is considered "retro gaming"?

Now I feel old!

Anyway, Sega Genesis was the only older system that I had the luxury of owning when I was a kid. A lot of people I know owned Nintendos, though. It was fun, and I still tend to stick to side-scrolling games or basic fighting games where there isn't too much 3D space to get confused in.

I'm not old enough to remember atari fondly, or any of those really old school games.

I do remember playing on my uncles C64 from time to time, Racing Destruction Set was my favorite game. Designing crazy race tracks was so much fun, and changing the gravity... the game was way beyond its time. That game forshadowed my addiction to the Simcity and Roller Coaster Tycoon games where I can design whatever I wanted.

But for me my favorite is NES/SNES, its hard for me to choose. I can pretty much create chronological history of my childhood based on each game I had for these systems. Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy all bring back great memories.

I've been thinking about starting up a collection of old NES/SNES games, every time I become bitter that modern games care too much about style and presentation then gameplay. I think as I get older I will become a retro gamer exclusively.

I have to agree with you Pugly. The basic platform games, side scrolling shooters and simple 'clear the board, get the power ups, score a zillion points' stuff (Bubble Bobble is a nice example, and still as playable now as it was in 1987. heh) were always meant to be fun above all else, and playability was the key to a good game. (I haven't got Racing Destruction Set though - I'll have to look out for that :D) Unfortunately the power of games machines now is such that too much attention is focused on impressive visual effects and more complex playfields. This is nice and can make for some dazzling games, but too often they forget to make it any fun. :(

I like the MAME emulator too - most of my emulators seem to be for Dreamcast, I have MAME and also SMEG, DreamSNES, and a megadrive/genesis emulator somewhere I think - which reminds me I need to get another emulator as I lost the one on my PC in a crash, but I want to play Road Rash... I did have UAE, but couldn't get it to work properly (though the PC I had at the time was crap).
But I reserve pride of place for CCS64, a brilliant C64 emulator for Windows. I won't wibble (again) but thats the one I usually go for when I want a retro 'fix'. Oh and stevie - you cant tell me you had a speccy and don't still have a soft spot for Manic Miner, or the Dizzy games... 8O

Did no one like the flash video link then? Must just be me in that case. "The games you get today, might be very flash, but they'll never beat the thrill of getting through Jetpac..." catchy song. :nerdy:

I must admit that I only played "Manic Miner" after "Willy", and found it a little bit naff in comparison (and I was also always killed on the 12th screen ), and I <cough> never actually played Dizzy (shifts in his seat uncomfortably as his retro-credibility is eroded a tad....)

"Knightlore" and "Skool Daze" - now those were games..... "Knightlore" was the first game I ever completed, and I used to spend hours on "Skool Daze" without ever knowing what the object of the game actually was (I never had the instructions for it), but loved it anyway. :)

I remember when I was a kid my parents sold their knackered old car and had just enough money to buy an Atari lol. We used to play it as a family for hours- I still have it and occasionally will get it out (but get so frustrated cos the joysticks don't work all that great).

They later got us a zx spectrum but I used to get so annoyed with it cos the games would hardly ever load right.

I probably going to get shot right now for saying this but most of the old games just left me frustrated. I'd much rather play Tony Hawks on my xbox than any of the old games.

/me runs for cover from angry retro gamers.

Its amazing how hard the old games were compared to the newer ones.... 'kids today - don't know they were born' and all that. I used to melt the television with the streams of invective "Lunar Jetman" used to instill in me.......

I still have my original NES and SNES, and I play them both frequently. I had an Atari 2600 ages ago, but the NES is what really turned me on to video games.

I actually asked for and received several NES and SNES games for this Christmas. I generally tend to play RPGs most of the time, but I also love classic side-scrolling and overhead action series like Super Mario Brothers, Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda.

For all of you SNES owners who are fans of the original Super Mario Brothers series, I strongly suggest picking up Super Mario All-Stars. This thing has Super Mario Brothers 1, Super Mario Brothers 2 (Japanese), Super Mario Brothers 2 (U.S.), and Super Mario Brothers 3 all on the same cartridge.

I chose SNES as my favorite old platform. Some of my favorite games on the platform are Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, ActRaiser, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy IV (II U.S.), Final Fantasy VI (III U.S.), Earthbound, and Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals. Heh, I actually own all of those, too.

I have to give the NES high marks for the incredible pioneering that occurred on the system, though. I don't know if video gaming would have developed into such a popular industry without the original Nintendo.

I voted SNES. It is not only my favorite retro-system but also probably my favorite system of all time, period. I had the most fun on that and I miss those days but now I have moved on to the Gamecube.

JayShaw, have you played Super Mario RPG? Based on the games you mention I think you'd enjoy it. It is a combination between a Mario action game and a Square RPG. Very entertaining, and it saddens me that Nintendo and Square split up so that there won't ever be a sequel. :(

Yep, I sure have. I own practically every RPG made on the SNES, including this one. I actually played through Super Mario RPG just a few months ago. I picked up most of the best items in the game, but I couldn't figure out how to do 30 super jumps to get the attack scarf, let alone how to do 100 to get the super suit.
