Does anyone get annoyed when an ingame character says the exact same line over and over like a broken record, without any alternate sounds to play at random?

Some of you are probably familiar with this example: "YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY?! THE MORE, THE MERRIER!! YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY?! THE MORE, THE MERRIER!! YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY?! THE MORE, THE MERRIER!! YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY?! THE MORE, THE MERRIER!! YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY?! THE MORE, THE MERRIER!!"

I wonder why some game developers still try to get away with this. Back in the old days, there may have been an excuse for this, but not anymore.

For more fun, string multiple lines of the stuff together.

The result is your average conversation in Oblivion...

Usually it has to be triggered somehow. Sometimes it happens when there aren't enough alternate lines. I've been playing Painkiller: Overdose and there was one incident when I was killing a bunch of monsters and Belial said "Dun, dun, dun, another bites the dust!" multiple times in a row, so I started singing "And another one's gone, and another one's gone." :P

This kind of thing rears its ugly head all the time in Real Time Strategy games, since it triggers a voice response from your units every time you give them an order. A particularly bad case of broken-record-syndrome was in Warhammer 40k DoW, playing as the orcs. I find anything Warhammer endlessly entertaining, especially the unified WAAAGHcries of tons of orcs, but when you're commanding massive battalions of units and every five seconds or so you hear "Sod off!" it can only be funny for just so long before it becomes necessary to add the Warboss to the group just to keep things fresh.

My son repeats the phrase "Cover me, I'm reloading" a lot now. I think he was listening to Call of Duty or something.

I think it's funny when things get repeated a lot. I don't think a game doing that would bother me but I would be kind of worried that it was scratched. I hate consoles that scratch my games!
