I was 10 when I started playing Harvest Moon on the supernes..
Later on when I was about 14-15, I got Harvest Moon: Back to Nature for the playstation and I think there are some ps2 versions of harvest moon as well.
It's fairly easy, though quite repetitive, so I'm not sure if it'll hold their attention (I was completely obsessed with it and don't mind repetition)...
But anyway, the basic concept is this:
You're a young city boy who inherits a piece of land from his granddad.
So you move out to the country and it's up to you to make the farm successful again,
you do this by planting crops, watering and harvesting them. You also get to take care of chickens, sheep and cows, you can go fishing... and you get a horse to ride on your land with (I think you can take your horse to town in more recent versions).
Apart from taking care of the land and earning money to keep it up, you get to mingle with the people in town.
You can make friends with them and you can marry one of the girls there.
You also need to go to town to buy seeds, food, etc.
Depending on how well you do with socializing and taking care of your land, you can get different endings to the game, which makes it quite interesting (e.g. you can completely neglect the farm and have your parents be disappointed, you can be a pro and have everyone cheer you on etc.)
Violence is pretty much non-existent in this game.
You do need reading skills though, to play this game, so it might not be suitable for the little one just yet.
But like I said, you have to be able to handle repetition to be able to play this game.
