Gears of War 2
Entirely overhyped.
The story drags on and is turning into a "humanity ruined the world....again!!" kind of plot so far and that's kind of a turnoff.
been playing co-op with a friend who has it and a very strong B (not a show stopper but glaringly obviously a bug) issue showed up. in the cave part driving the tank, when jumping off the cliff to the spiders, the driver camera is completely ruined and doesn't function correctly due to the spacing of the area and the cannon operator's view is independent from the driver's view so in order to navigate, had to get cannon operator (pkf) to face the right way and follow my turns to try and navigate out. took too long, was too frustrating and was NOT cooperative game play.
there was another really crappy co-op part where you and the teammate have to carry a large item to a spot and the controls are shoddy, the user cannot place the item down to clear a room then get back to carrying, and did i mention the controls sucked? if so, then i didn't enough.
the gameplay has been pretty vanilla too. no monsters like the bezerkers so far and i think i'm fairly far into the game.
who else has been let down so far by the actual game part of the game? (online doesn't count; any loser who knows code can make a generic map, put weapons in it, and set up monster spawns not really like the first game's design quality in the story mode)

I thought the game was too short overall. And the storyline with the Locusts is getting flaky. Its such a common tactic in sci-fi to make the enemies fleeing some greater enemy. Not to mention that but the 'Lambent' are pretty much a joke, I don't get how the Locust were on the verge of defeat but able to isolate humanity. Plus like you said its another story of it being the Human's fault, with the Imulsion obviously meant to be a satire on oil. Also the game isn't that hard even on higher difficulties. I haven't played it on anything less then the hardcore difficulty level. The Horde Mode online is a lot of fun though, and the graphics and scenery in the game are absolutely terrific. The Hollow was done very well, and I think the concept of a separate world of underground life developing is quite fascinating. I don't get why the Locust Queen is a human though, I hope they don't turn the story into the Locusts being created by Humans as an experiment or something stupid...
vigilans, do you know which part i'm talking about with the tank and the giant spiders after falling off the cliff.

Game was a bit short, but if you want, I will discus my thoughts of the story, and what extra I think I know.
My guess is that Locust used to live underground in a secret city. Aparently acording to lore, there was creatures like th boogey man that when in the dark would steal children that misbehaved or something like that. Any way humans had been known to fight, and at one point fosil fuels were becoming very few, and energy was quite scarce, but that changed with the descovery of imulsion, and humanity was at peace. But then their was a war over fighting for imulsion, and this pendulem war was getting quite costly, especialy in lives. Now from what is known their was a research facility where they were experimenting with what they found of a race which apparently were the Locust, and they were mutating their DNA to humans to create super soldiers to end the war. Now some of the experiments though not always sucesfull did create a few different varients, one in particular was a little girl that had bonded with the mutation perfectly, creating what could be thought of the perfect being. These experiments were being mistreated by many of the doctors, but there were a few that thought some of these were wrong and that they should be treated better. One in particular was Marcus's father, who treated the little girl very well despite how others treated her like an experiment or just not human. Some of the war was apparently getting close to the research facility, or it was inconvenient to stay at the base, so instead they were moving it closer to what was the main hive to the Locust. From what I know next is that once at the new base at a mountain that was done fairly quickly, the head of the project left a AI based on himself to look after the base, and possibly on the growth of some super soldiers they were planning to grow for the future. The original Locust kidnaped the girl, from the humans and she finaly saw how she was being mistreated by the humans, she began to grow deep hatred for them, and being the perfect Locust was then put in charge as their queen. From what I guess the war was solved without this project, and some how the little girl that had now grown into becomeing the Locust queen had some how gained an army of experimental Locust's, and then planned to attack the humans. On E day she finaly attacked all human main cities, Markus's father realised what had hapend and had knew he had to secure information on the tunels and get to this girl to talk to her. Of course this is what made Marcus, go to jail when he tried to save his father wher ever he whent, though he did not find him. My guess is that his father had then either by himself, or by force stayed near the queen, if by own power, was to one day convince her and or she used him to help her create strong varients of the Locust.
Now for some extra information on the Imulsiom/Lambent. Mostly their is just roumers, some is that obviously the Imulsion is very reactive to Locst DNA. Where ever it only effects Human/Locust experiment varients is not clear, but though they seemed to still work for the Locust in GoW1 is changed over in 2. One I have heard is that the Imulsion is infact filled with parasites, that in humans just kill the body, in the form of Rust lung, but in Locust can aparently go to the point of opposing the rest of the Locust, and scareing the queen. Now posibly, Markus's father shares some fear of this, and convinces the queen to leave the hive along with most of the clean ones as to flood the hive and stop the Lambent. This would also destroy the last human city, though humans seem to think it would be a good idea to flood the hive before they all get out, as to stop the Locust. In doing this the Imulsion parasites instead of drowning mostly due to lack of hosts will instead be able to move freely through the water and infest all of the bodies that had not yet escaped, which will lead to some big threat against the COG and Locust. Though all of this is not nececerily true, especialy this paragraph.

Aiye, I remember that part, but I haven't played it in co-op yet so I haven't experienced that camera angle trouble
sucks. working in QA...that kind of garbage should be found. it's not like it's out of the user path.

it wasn't better. it was just longer and with better acting. too many parts don't flow well and the bad guys aren't as interesting for the most part.
also it's too easy.

I thought the game was decent. I did not experience the problem with the camera after falling off the cliff. I'm player 2 in co-op, so I'm controlling the gun and light and haven't had any trouble killing the enemies there.
The worst issue I've had is later on when you fight the giant fish. Quite often the boat seems to rise/drop and my character gets stuck in mid-air and can not move. Then I either get killed by a tentacle or by the jaws of the fish.
In general, I hate scripted boss fights. The berserker fights were better, but they're still mostly scripted boss fights.
I'm surprised to read that someone thought the game was too easy. I'm playing on the hardest level right now and I can barely keep my head up. My wife plays on the next hardest level and the enemies completely leave her alone to target me. I spent most of my time in firefights behind cover and blind-firing because the stream of bullets over my head never ends.
I give the developers credit in that they did come up with a lot of creative scenarios. Most of the levels are quite different from each other.
I do think the second game is a bit more gimmicky and less of a shooter. I have the same complaint about Halo3 - too many vehicle levels and not enough of a shooter. I enjoy the games more when I'm shooting at an equal - not getting 1 shot kills because I'm in a vehicle with a massive weapon.

my friend had the same problem as you did with clipping through the parts that you're not supposed to walk on. luckily for him, he got caught close enough to where when the fish bit, he was inside the mouth and could just fire away as needed.
the screen with the gun and light was the one that worked correctly while the driver's camera was completely ruined until finally out of that entirely too small area. i actually had to stop playing because i was getting so frustrated with it....and, well, i don't like work finding me at home.

Who needs a plot in a shoot-em-up game? It's like demanding a plot in a porn movie, in that character development is irrelevant because characters are presented as objects to provide a basis for activity.
