I've just bought a PS2 off eBay and I have two PS1 games that I want to play. To start with, these played fine a couple of times - no problems. I played through several levels, saved etc.

Then they had some problems loading, but loaded eventually after several attempts.

And now they won't load at all.

I don't get a clicking sound and the game appears to load. The PS logo appears fine and then the screen goes blank with the 'composite' logo flashing in the top left hand corner of the screen (DELL computer monitor). The sound works fine so the game has loaded and is running. I tried a different lead but it made no difference. No matter how many times I restart the console it won't work.

I have tried fourteen PS2 games with it and they all load fine.

Can someone please help?

I'm having a similar problem, though only with one PS1 game I bought recently. There are no scratches or breaks on the disk, but the PS2 simply won't see it. It may be a problem with older PS2's, as mine is 7 years old now.

Greyhound,
are ps1 games meant to support monitor useage? just wondering,as dont know much about the use for them pre dreamcast adapter use.
although its a ps2 console, could the game itself-being ps1 be the problem? it would be good if could get those ps1 games working through a normal tv on the ps2,as well as trying them through an old ps1-if have got one,to see if it's a monitor compatibility thing,or hardware or disc even.

had been wondering if it had been chipped [to play pirates/imports] as they can mess up recognising ps1 games and with disc swapping, but it seems like it may be a monitor problem anyway-at least that would be more likely if they will work on the ps2 fine through a normal tv.

sacrip,
give it to someone else with a ps1 if do not have a spare fully working console-to test it,see if it's working on theirs.
usually the first things will notice when the laser is going is loud clicking, and the blue discs and dvds stop working first [if am remember correctly].
have got a first issue ps2 [from the day it was released] it sometimes decides to load a ps2 game, but loads ps1 games perfectly.

problem with ps is their lasers [even on the slim ps2s] do not seem to be very stable,no idea what the third one is like as do not have one.

sacrip, what game is it? A handful of PS1 games are not compatible with the PS2.

KingdomOfRats, I do think it may be a monitor incompatibility problem but the fact that it works at random times makes it extra confusing - I managed to get it working again today. It helps if you fiddle around with the console configuration first, but even then there's no guarantee it will work. I'm glad that it works sometimes and that it will play PS2 games though :)

have you considered that the laser could have a problem yet? read errors on aged PS2s are a very common problem due to ware or decalibration of the laser unit. this does include the problem of being able to read one kind of disc and not another. there are many guides online that instruct how to clean and adjust it.

determining monitor compatability should be easy to test by trying the system using a television set instead.

I know. My friend's not at home at the moment though, so I can't borrow his TV. I don't have a TV at home so I can't test it at the moment.

The game is Chessmaster, bought for $3 at the local video game shop at the mall. Kinda disappointing really, since I was looking foreward to learning chess without, you know, playing with other people.

I can't help you then I'm afraid. It should be compatible.

I think it's available as a PS2 game though.

Theres a common problem with ps2s, especially the older ones, where they have trouble reading ps1 games, sometimes dvds or blue backed ps2 games... I had to open mine up and adjust a little gear thingy to move the lens closer to the disc. Once I found the perfect spot, it started working again.

I don't have that problem with my PS2, and it is one of the older ones.

I own a first generation PS2. Mine has trouble reading some "heavy" games. My PS2 perfectly plays DVDs, PS1 discs and old PS2 games.

I have problems with this games:

- Final Fantasy XII
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence/Snake Eater
- Pump It Up: Exceed

I cleaned the laser lens, and the problems with those games were fixed. But after some months read errors came back and I cleaned the laser lens again. Now, neither cleaning or calibrate the laser lens help me to fix my PS2. Maybe I have to replace the laser unit.
