Recently my little brother purr-chased the long awaited F.E.A.R. 2
all i can say is "glad it wasn't me", the game sucked.
i probably got 70% head shots thx to a red dot sight mounted on nearly every gun mixed with slow-motion. the pistols that were so iconic thought the 1st 3 titles in the series were tossed aside for a brick that's fire power is surpassed easily by harsh words and only practical application is pistol whipping. speaking of melee, they upgraded the system so that u pressed buttons the made sense when compared to what happens (like sprinting for a slide kick) only problem being melee is no longer practical eg; i didn't use 1 slide kick or fly kick in the entire game that wasn't followed by my death. the combat is pretty, but has lost the over the top wild spraying, exploding enemies with proxy grenades, and melee combat in favour of hiding behind a overturned counter (i actually managed to go the entire game without doing that because i never needed to) waiting 4 slomo to recharge so u can get another barrage of head shots. playing through on the hardest difficulty i barely died at all, in the 1st 3 titles i would creep around with my flash light off at times because i was afraid of the clones nearly as much as Alma
but enough on how they added a few alright combat fetchers and got rid of the good ones. F.E.A.R. is about fear, but F.E.A.R 2 isn't... i psyched myself out that i was playing F.E.A.R 2 to the point that i was afraid for the 1st few levels. however no amount of hero worship of the series can blind anyone to the fact F.E.A.R 2 isn't scary, not by a long shot. there are a handful of 'fear moments' like the ones that frequently appeared in the better titles of the series. however they weren’t that scary and sum of the time i was simply looking the other way and missed it. playing F.E.A.R. i would always explore because i knew the game rewarded exploration by making u s**t ur pants, i gave up on exploring in F.E.A.R 2 because pants were not shat. it got so bad that i played the final levels alone, in the dark, in a large shed with lots of shadows, in the dead of night... and still nothing. "final battle" with Alma was so poorly done i found it more of a turn on then anything else, before this abomination of a game i never considered Alma in another stuff then the stuff of nightmares.
over all:
original F.E.A.R gave me amazing combat and nightmares
F.E.A.R 2 gave me repetitive combat that was easily bested even on the hardest difficulty and wet dreams (well not really, just an expression)
