Has anyone seen Terry Gilliam's Brazil? I think his take on Christmas in that movie is hilarious and becoming more and more accurate.

I don't have a problem with the religious aspect (I'm an atheist), but I hate the ultra-commercial, over-the-top consumeristic aspect of Christmas. I get along very well with my parents and we avoid the whole social, family-get-together thing (some of my relatives are truly awful). If I had the money, I would spend Christmas in Istanbul or Tel Aviv.

My parents don't have relatives coming at Christmas Dinner

*sings*
It's the most self-centered time of the year
With people wishing for gifts
And everyone thinking of
How to screw you
It's the most self-centered time of the year

er ... yeah. I don't like what Christmas has become either. It was suppose to be about the birth Christ, but it's more like which store can capitalize off the name of Christ the most. They will all go to hell. All I want for Christmas is peace on Earth and to be with my Girlfriend, and then I will be happy. No more wars and no more greediness in the world would be great. I am a dreamer though. :(

Seriously..Christ? Our holiday culture takes enough from pagan celebrations of the midwinter that worrying over the "meaning" is a little silly.

It's a celebration; one I happen not to participate in. Humans celebrate in many ways: giving a gift is not a hollow commercialistic act: it shows a willingness to forgo resources that could have been spent productively or in a manner that will assure happiness and instead invest it in a sort of gamble to show how close the giver and the recipient really are. This curious pattern of interaction manifests itself in all sorts of bizarre and incomprehensible social rituals. Also, I see spending and enjoying material goods, especially when one forgoes them most of the time, as an invigorating thing. That's my optimistic poor-kid's take on it.

Anyway, I can't help but love the time around the solstice even if I don't participate. It's festive and its joyous: a rebellion against the dead of the midwinter, an affirmation of life. I may not be able to get around Midtown for a solid month, but the atmosphere is glorious.
