Let's see. . in the War of my Youth, it was godless communism that was behind suicide attacks, and then the War of my Uncle's Youth. . it was the Japanese (Shinto?) that drove the airplanes into the ships.

The communists were more forced by their superiors than by personal belief. This is illustrated in the movie "Enemy at the Gates". They very much didn't want to die!
The Japanese however, believed their emperor to be a god. It was very much a religious belief in the case of their suicide attacks.
