I wasn't expecting this response either. I was just hoping for categories of the sort PostPerson, greenblue, iamnotaparakeet put forward.

After all, as I responded to Orwell:
Quote:
Would PPR be best divided into the people that Orwell notices, and the ones he does not? Or shall we have individual categories? If a category is purely individual, then is it really a category?

I am an opponent to the individualism in labeling I suppose, but I suppose it is a valid interpretation. This thread is now wp's, not mine.

I agree but I guess you could categorize this into 2 groups of people: Popularity and Contribution.

Here is my categorization for PPR:

*Pro-science reductionists, usually are atheists and strong empiricists
*Christians, will bring the Christian religion up in conversation, I define this group as usually bringing up religion more, and not necessarily being as mystical as others
*Philosophers, thoughtful but can be unpredictable in their stances
*Mystics, usually known for their position on the supernatural
*Left-wingers, this group is aligned to the left, they usually side philosophically with the pro-science group(if I remember correctly), but their major issue is that they identify more strongly with a left-wing view on politics.
*Anti-government folks, these are the conspiracy theorists and strong libertarians, they can be indifferent on metaphysics, or fall into other categories, but they are known for arguing against the government
*Bystanders, not known for strong opinions, but known for throwing in their opinions at times
*Assorted, people whose category I cannot come up with, or groups I have mistakenly omitted.

Any comments on this?

Jeez, I hope I didn't make anyone feel left out.

In order to categorize people, you have to be familiar with them. It's not a popularity contest, but there are some people who I see more of here than others. I have my own way of describing (categorizing) them.

There are many theists here, but I don't think they can all be lumped in together. The atheists here vary too much from one another as well. I can cagtegorize them more easily by how their personality shows through their posts.

Trying to avoid examples, you can categorize yourself. Also, the flame warriors tends to be insulting, while I just want to describe groups of people that we see on WP. If I thought that flame warriors were perfect, I would just post the link.

You can come out on the stoop and smoke with me. Just do not ask me what I am reading, or I might be one of the ones who creeps you out. :D

re: favouritism.

The inner circle of PPR are generally the most active posters in any category here so they acknowledge each other's social existence here. I don't post a lot becuase I'm not an evangelist or an apologist, so I don't really appear on people's social radar, or only as a distant blip! I don't recall seeing Timtex around PPR much either, so the usual social structure circles of inner and outer apply.

In other words I agree, but it's a social phenomenon.

I was talking about WP in general.

I do go on PPR now and then, though.

You know, the PPR area should make a sticky for the question "do you believe in god?" it seems to be a popular question asked here. I don't really post in here. There isn't much variety in here. Just seems the same questions are asked in different ways, over and over.

I think the same thing about the other forums actually. Like, mostly just the same or similar things popping up over and over again, but that's life, right?

PPR can seem a bit cliquish, but it's not as though we exclude new contributors. I remember when Dent first showed up here, he was new to PPR but we didn't do anything to specifically exclude him from discussion. Now he's a well-established regular, seemingly as much a part of the PPR gang as the rest of us. As a relatively small number of people interact on a regular basis, they'll tend to build up a rapport of sorts. That doesn't mean we're not open to new people coming around- the only people we ever really exclude are racists and conspiracy nuts.

PPR does get redundant at times but for the most part it is the most interesting. The other forums have too many cry babies on them.

Claire333 is the innocent bystander.

There are the bad boys. These people mock others and can be a bit intimidating.

Those who fall under the bad boy list are:

AG is the funny intellectual who makes obscure references
twoshots the mathematician
Sand the Atheist
Der Gegner the satirist
haliphron the yeller

Then there are the rational intellectuals:
Greenblue the Theist
Orwell the historian

The nice philosophers:
Anna Banana
ToadofSteel

The delusionals (Mystics):
Myself
Averick the taoist
Bunny-in-the-moon
alba

Then there is Fnord the skeptic and slowmutant the Christian

That's it off the top of my head for now...

These are mostly good. Though I thought greenblue was atheist? I would put AG more under the category of "absurdly stubborn and well-educated guy who argues just for the sake of arguing." But he has lately been going for more comedic effect in a variety of polls.

Do I really make that many historical references? Maybe my history major is taking up too much of my time.

And I'm sure Fnord will pop in to tell you that I and slowmutant also belong under the "delusionals" category.

I thought GreenBlue was a Theist. At least his posts seem to be open to it.
Orwell, you are a pretty moderate Theist so that is why you weren't lumped into the delusionist group.

slowmutant's Christian side outweighs all else so that is why I put him in his own category.
I think the delusionists lean more toward spiritual speculation rather than focus on religious references.

Greenblue, care to settle the controversy?
